Jathedar Baba Balbir Singh Akali 96 Crori, the chief of the revered institution of Nihang Singhs, Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal, has expressed concern over the ongoing controversy surrounding water issues between countries and states in India. He emphasized that instead of creating inter-state tensions, it is crucial to focus on the judicious use of natural resources. Baba Balbir Singh Akali 96 Crori highlighted that the dispute over water sharing between Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan has been ongoing for a long time, often being politicized for vested interests. Recently, a Haryana leader threatened to block national highways if additional water is not provided to the state. The Nihang chief pointed out that the current situation has been exacerbated by statements about suspending the Indus Water Treaty and stopping water flow to Pakistan following the Pulwama attack, leading to increased tensions between the two countries. He noted that the control over water distribution and canal supply for the three states lies with the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The water levels in Bhakra and Pong dams (as of April 24, 2025) are 4 and 10 meters below normal, respectively, with the Pong Dam's level being 548% below average, leaving only about 13% of its live storage capacity. Baba Balbir Singh Akali 96 Crori emphasized that fulfilling the demand for an additional 8500 cusecs of water from another state is not feasible. He also highlighted that Punjab faces a growing crisis of clean drinking water every year, and climate change is reducing the water flow in rivers. He urged governments and political leaders to prioritize conservation and judicious use of water and other natural resources instead of politicizing the issue, promoting a path of sustainability and cooperation.
