Fake passport racket: Cops tracking foreign nationals enrolled in voters' list in Bengal

Foreign nationals, mainly Bangladeshis, enrolled in the voters' list in West Bengal with forged documents, are being tracked, police said on Wednesday.

Sources said the investigating officials have received some specific names of such foreign nationals whose fake Indian identity documents, including Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) cards, AADHAAR cards, and even Indian passports, were arranged by Azad Mullick, a Pakistani citizen recently arrested by the officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Kolkata.

Azad, a Pakistani citizen, first arranged Bangladeshi citizenship for himself and subsequently Indian citizenship, using forged documents.

Investigation revealed that Mullick was enrolled as a voter of Dum Dum-Uttar Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, which is again one of the seven Assembly constituencies under Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency.

Investigation also revealed that he had voted twice, first in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election and then in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a suspect from Nadiad for alleged involvement in anti-national cyber activities.

The accused, identified as Jasim Ansari, has been taken into custody along with his associate, both suspected to be part of a broader cyber conspiracy.

According to ATS sources, the duo was allegedly involved in an attempt to target Indian government websites during 'Operation Sindoor'.

The suspects are accused of associating with anti-India groups with the intent to disrupt the official digital infrastructure.

Among the sites targeted was the Aadhaar card portal, which they allegedly attempted to hack. Investigators revealed that both accused are matriculation-level passouts who reportedly learned hacking through YouTube tutorials and other online platforms.

In an operation against narcotics trafficking, the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) of the Gujarat Police carried out a well-coordinated raid targeting an illegal drug operation in the state's Sabarkantha district.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the SMC team raided the residence of Khursidkhan Sadatkhan Pathan in Sanjarnagar, Madani Society, in Himmatnagar city in the district.

The two-day raid, conducted under the provisions of the NDPS Act Sections 8(C), 22(C), 29 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act Sections 111(3) and 111(4), led to a major seizure of drugs and related materials. During the search, the team recovered 195.280 grams of Mephedrone, a banned synthetic stimulant, valued at Rs 19,52,800. In addition, the police seized two mobile phones worth Rs 10,000, Rs 79,280 in cash, two weighing scales valued at Rs 1,000, and 136 blank zipper bags used for packaging drugs.

In a major action against the illegal liquor trade, the Special Staff of Delhi Police has seized 44 cartons containing 2,200 quarters of 'desi' illicit liquor, which were marked “For Sale in Haryana Only”.

The operation also led to the confiscation of a Tata Ace tempo used in transporting the contraband. The seizure was made following a coordinated effort by a dedicated police team acting on a tip-off regarding the movement of illicit liquor into the national capital.

To tackle the ongoing issue of illegal liquor distribution, the Special Staff had been assigned to keep a close watch on suspected bootleggers operating in the area.

Regular patrolling and intelligence-gathering were intensified. Acting on specific information received by Head Constable Sumer Singh, the team, comprising ASI Manoj, HC Sumer Singh, HC Chetram Meena, Constable Sanjay, and Woman Constable Nirmala, under the leadership of Inspector Vijay Baliyan and the close supervision of Vijay Kumar, ACP/Operations, set up a trap near the Dhaula Kuan roundabout on May 18.

After a decade-long chase, police arrested Ravi Soni -- the last accused of theft of five massive industrial nuts, each weighing nearly 5,000 kilograms, from Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh.

Soni had been evading capture since his involvement in the case. His long period of hiding was finally cut short when police acted on fresh intelligence, tracked him to his hideout.

Soni, along with four accomplices, conspired in the theft of five massive industrial nuts from the plate mill’s spare yard, valued at an astonishing combined value of Rs 65 lakh.

While his associates had already been arrested, Soni had managed to stay hidden until now.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Police have foiled an alleged terror plot with the arrest of two suspects, who were allegedly planning to carry out bomb blasts.

In a joint operation, police of the two Telugu states arrested Siraj-ur Rehman (29) of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh and Sayeed Sameer (28), a resident of Bohiguda in Secunderabad.

According to police, Siraj is an engineering graduate who was looking for a job, while Sameer is a lift operator.

The accused were produced before a magistrate in Vizianagaram, who sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.

Siraj’s father is reported to be an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police, while his brother is a constable. Siraj’s father wanted him to become a police officer, but he allegedly became attracted to terror.

In a major crackdown on gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, arrested a Chadian national who arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from Addis Ababa, after seizing 4,015 grams of gold worth Rs 3.86 crore ingeniously concealed in the heels of his slippers.

Acting on specific Intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the male passenger shortly after his arrival in Mumbai. Upon conducting a personal search, the officers discovered multiple foreign-origin gold bars cleverly hidden inside the modified heels of the man’s slippers.

In his voluntary statement recorded by officials, the Chadian national admitted to concealing the gold in this unusual manner to bypass customs checks and evade legal detection. The gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and the passenger was placed under arrest.

Officials stated that further investigations are underway to trace the origin and intended recipients of the smuggled consignment and to determine if the incident is linked to a broader smuggling network.

Odisha Vigilance arrests govt officer over charges of corruption

The Odisha Vigilance Department has arrested a senior government official, who was found possessing assets worth crores disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said.

The accused official was identified as Asit Kumar Patra, posted as Additional Block Development Officer (ABDO) at Dharmasala block of Jajpur district.

"On May 16, Patra was arrested by Odisha Vigilance and handed over to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, for possession of Disproportionate Assets (DA) to the tune of 205 per cent of his known sources of income, which he could not account for satisfactorily," said a senior official on Friday.

A case has been registered against Patra and his spouse under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

The vigilance officials earlier on Thursday unearthed huge movable and immovable assets belonging to Patra and his family members during house searches at different locations linked to the accused ABDO.
