Australian researchers launch pioneering trial targeting untreatable cancers

Australian researchers have launched a pioneering clinical trial that aims to combat aggressive cancers previously deemed untreatable.

The trial led by a team from the Australian National University (ANU) focussed on malignancies driven by the elusive MYC protein -- a protein implicated in 70 per cent of human cancers --, news agency reported.

The success of the trial could redefine treatment paradigms for aggressive malignancies globally, offering a template for tackling other molecularly complex diseases, said the team.

The study will test an experimental drug, PMR-116, designed to disrupt cancer growth mechanisms in patients with prostate, breast, ovarian, and blood cancers, or MYC-driven tumours.

FIH Pro League: India suffer fifth straight loss, go down 3-2 against Australia

The Indian men's hockey team suffered another heartbreak as they slumped to defeat despite taking a 2-0 lead as the Kookaburras bounced back to prevail 3-2 in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 here in Antwerp on Saturday.

Following four successive narrow losses in the European leg, the Indian team, sans their captain Harmanpreet Singh, had a dream start against Australia until they floundered in the final quarter, allowing their opponents to come back. It was goals by Nathan Ephraums (42'), Joel Rintala (56'), and Tom Craig (60') that put Australia ahead, while Abhishek (8', 35') scored a double for India.

It was an entertaining opening quarter with India taking the lead as early as the eighth minute of the game. The initial few minutes saw both teams trade chances in the circles until a perfect pass from the midfield by Manpreet Singh, who is on 399 international caps, to Abhishek positioned at the top of the circle fetched India a crucial 1-0 lead.

According to the IDF, the nine scientists were instrumental in advancing Iran's efforts to acquire a nuclear weapon.

"All the scientists and experts who were eliminated were significant sources of knowledge in the Iranian nuclear project and had decades of cumulative experience in the development of nuclear weapons," the military stated.

Those killed in the strikes were identified as Fereydoon Abbasi, a nuclear engineering expert; Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a physicist; Akbar Motalebi Zadeh, a chemical engineering expert; Saeed Barji, an expert in materials engineering; Amir Hassan Fakhahi, a physicist; Abd al-Hamid Minoushehr, an expert in reactor physics; Mansour Asgari, a physicist; Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari Daryani, a nuclear engineer; and Ali Bakhouei Katirimi, a mechanical expert.

Study shows alcohol-linked liver deaths rising in women, young adults

Study shows alcohol-linked liver deaths rising in women, young adults

Alcohol-related liver disease deaths are increasing rapidly among women and young adults, according to new research.

Researchers from the Universities Havard, Stanford, and Southern California (USC) attributed the rise to higher drinking during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to increasing health problems like obesity and high blood pressure.

"The pandemic itself came under control, but the disparities that came with it continued and lingered," said Dr. Nasim Maleki, a psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School.

The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, based on death certificates from across the US showed that between 2018 and 2022, deaths from alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) rose nearly 9 per cent a year. Between 2006 and 2018, ALD deaths stood at 3.5 per cent per year.

While men still had the highest number of deaths -- 17 per 100,000 people -- women's death rates grew faster.

Israel slams Iranian media for 'spreading lies', calls downing of F-35 jets 'fake news'

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Saturday accused the Iranian media of "spreading lies" while terming reports about the downing of two Israeli F-35 fighter jets as "fake news".

Iran on Saturday claimed that the air defence force of its army has successfully shot down and destroyed two Israeli F-35 fighter jets and a large number of other micro air vehicles.

IDF's international spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani took to social media, labelling it as a "complete FAKE NEWS".

"While the Iranian regime spreads lies, we're taking down real threats like this Iranian UAV shot down over northern Israel this morning," he posted on X along with a video of Israeli defence forces downing an Iranian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

Foreign investors infuse over Rs 3,346 crore into Indian stock markets this week

Foreign investors infuse over Rs 3,346 crore into Indian stock markets this week

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) brought in Rs 3,346.94 crore into the Indian stock markets this week, as investor confidence received a strong boost following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) rate cut.

According to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), FPIs were active buyers in the Indian equity market during the first three trading sessions of the week -- from June 9 to June 13.

The positive mood in the market was largely driven by the RBI’s decision to reduce the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 percent, a move that many saw as a clear signal to support economic growth and improve market liquidity.

Market experts believe that this surprise rate cut has played a big role in attracting foreign investments, as it reflects a pro-growth approach from the central bank.

SpiceJet Q4 revenue drops 16 pc, net profit jumps to Rs 325 crore

Low-cost Indian airline SpiceJet on Saturday announced that its revenue from operations fell 16 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 1,446.37 crore in Q4 FY25, down from Rs 1,719.3 crore in the corresponding quarter of FY24 (Q4 FY24).

However, the budget carrier’s profit soared nearly three times as profit after tax (PAT) rose to Rs 324.87 crore from Rs 119 crore in the year-ago quarter (Q4 FY24).

The company credited this turnaround to better passenger yields, strong load factors, and cost optimisation.

For the full financial year 2024-25, SpiceJet recorded a profit of Rs 580.74 crore, a remarkable recovery from the loss of Rs 409 crore in FY24.

However, annual revenue from operations declined by 25 per cent, dropping to Rs 5,284 crore compared to Rs 7,050 crore in the previous fiscal.
