Elusive accused arrested after a decade in industrial 5000 kg-nut theft case

After a decade-long chase, police arrested Ravi Soni -- the last accused of theft of five massive industrial nuts, each weighing nearly 5,000 kilograms, from Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh.

Soni had been evading capture since his involvement in the case. His long period of hiding was finally cut short when police acted on fresh intelligence, tracked him to his hideout.

Soni, along with four accomplices, conspired in the theft of five massive industrial nuts from the plate mill’s spare yard, valued at an astonishing combined value of Rs 65 lakh.

While his associates had already been arrested, Soni had managed to stay hidden until now.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Police have foiled an alleged terror plot with the arrest of two suspects, who were allegedly planning to carry out bomb blasts.

In a joint operation, police of the two Telugu states arrested Siraj-ur Rehman (29) of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh and Sayeed Sameer (28), a resident of Bohiguda in Secunderabad.

According to police, Siraj is an engineering graduate who was looking for a job, while Sameer is a lift operator.

The accused were produced before a magistrate in Vizianagaram, who sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.

Siraj’s father is reported to be an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police, while his brother is a constable. Siraj’s father wanted him to become a police officer, but he allegedly became attracted to terror.

DIG Pandey said that around 10.30 am, the jawans noticed the suspicious movement of two individuals near Hakimpur Uttarpara village. Both were stopped and questioned, followed by a thorough search, adding that during the search, 10 gold biscuits were recovered from their possession.

In a major crackdown on gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, arrested a Chadian national who arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from Addis Ababa, after seizing 4,015 grams of gold worth Rs 3.86 crore ingeniously concealed in the heels of his slippers.

Acting on specific Intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the male passenger shortly after his arrival in Mumbai. Upon conducting a personal search, the officers discovered multiple foreign-origin gold bars cleverly hidden inside the modified heels of the man’s slippers.

In his voluntary statement recorded by officials, the Chadian national admitted to concealing the gold in this unusual manner to bypass customs checks and evade legal detection. The gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and the passenger was placed under arrest.

Officials stated that further investigations are underway to trace the origin and intended recipients of the smuggled consignment and to determine if the incident is linked to a broader smuggling network.

The Odisha Vigilance Department has arrested a senior government official, who was found possessing assets worth crores disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said.

The accused official was identified as Asit Kumar Patra, posted as Additional Block Development Officer (ABDO) at Dharmasala block of Jajpur district.

"On May 16, Patra was arrested by Odisha Vigilance and handed over to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, for possession of Disproportionate Assets (DA) to the tune of 205 per cent of his known sources of income, which he could not account for satisfactorily," said a senior official on Friday.

A case has been registered against Patra and his spouse under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

The vigilance officials earlier on Thursday unearthed huge movable and immovable assets belonging to Patra and his family members during house searches at different locations linked to the accused ABDO.

The West Bengal Police, investigating a multi-crore fake passport racket, have uncovered documents indicating that several passports were issued to individuals who do not exist at all.

In a recent report submitted to the Calcutta High Court, investigators claimed that at least 37 such passports were found to have been issued to persons who could not be traced at the addresses mentioned in the documents.

During interrogation and field verification, officials could not find any evidence suggesting these individuals ever lived at the listed addresses.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the findings point to serious lapses in the physical verification process, which is mandatory for passport issuance.

In a shocking incident that took place late Wednesday night, a man was shot dead by unidentified assailants while returning home with his father in a car in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district, police officials said on Thursday.

The incident took place near the Baridih forest under the Nawadih police station limits.

The deceased has been identified as Hemlal Pandit, a resident of Sirai village in Vishnugarh block of Hazaribagh district.

Both Hemlal and his father, Tulsi Pandit, were known locally for practising exorcism.

According to police sources, the two were returning home after conducting a ritual at a house in Nawadih when the attack took place.

Around midnight, three men on a motorcycle overtook their car and stopped them near the forested stretch. They asked for directions to Vanshi village. When Hemlal rolled down the window to respond, one of the men shot him at point-blank range. He died on the spot.

Kolkata Police cop arrested on charges of involvement in robbery

Kolkata Police said on Wednesday that a cop attached to the Special Task Force (STF) has been arrested on charges of his involvement in a robbery where a hefty amount of a foreign exchange trading entity was looted in broad daylight and on the open roads in city earlier this month.

The arrested cop has been identified as Mintu Sarkar, who was attached to the STF of the city police. Sarkar, an original resident of South Dinajpur district in the northern sector of West Bengal, was arrested late Tuesday night by the sleuths of the Detective Department of the city police, which was carrying out an investigation in the matter, an insider from the city police said.

Sarkar is the seventh arrest made in the case. Sources said that the investigation is on whether Sarkar was directly involved in the robbery or just acted as a go-between in the case.

Assam Police have foiled a drug peddling attempt and seized narcotics worth Rs two crore in the Sribhumi district, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.

The seizure of drugs happened in the Sadarashi locality of the district.

The police have arrested two persons on charges of drug peddling.

Taking to X handle, CM Sarma wrote, “YABA Tablets Worth ₹2 Crore Seized In an anti-narcotics operation, @sribhumipolice recovered 10,000 YABA tablets at Sadarashi. 2 peddlers have been arrested in this connection. Kudos to @assampolice.”

According to the police, legal actions were undertaken under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
