Marriages are made in heaven and celebrated on earth. Baba Fauza Singh, religious head of Gurudwara Akaal Bunga Sahib Taksaal, Sohana, Jalandhar started a new tradition in marriage celebrations when for his own son’s marriage, instead of feisty Bhangras and Gidhas; there was a treat of cultural programme visualising our social ills and artistic yet pragmatic suggestions to curb them. This socially enlightening cultural bonanza was organised by the Art & Culture Wing of Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab on 02 January 2022 at Maple Leaves Palace, Kapurthala.

The Art & Cultural Wing of DBU has delivered in the past too many socially enlightening and mesmerising performances under the artistic mentorship of Dr. Devinder Kumar Sharma who is heading the University School of Education, Languages and Social Sciences at DBU.

Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab is the most trusted university among the dynamic youth of the nation with its fine focus on Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship while meticulously catering to diverse fields from medical sciences to engineering, management, hospitality industry, sciences and humanities.

The cultural insight was spread over a period of three days in which there was performed a play titled- “Asal Khumaari Naam Di”. The play depicted society’s call against drug abuse. There was also a ballet performance dedicated to Anti-dowry appeal. A theatrical performance highlighting the agricultural malpractices and environmental degradation made aware the audience, the need for sustainable agriculture.

DBU’s cultural team spelled magic with its splendid performances and commemorated art and culture’s role in building communities and its crusade against fighting social ills. Baba Fauza Sahib has set up an example by celebrating his son’s wedding in such brilliant way by offering a venue and opportunity for unique socially dedicated programmes. A gathering of more than one thousand people attended this cultural programme and were sensitized on societal concerns. Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof (Dr.) Shalini Gupta Ji shared her thoughts about the cathartic and consciousness- raising impact of art on our society.

Chancellor of DBU, Dr. Zora Singh Ji and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Tajinder Kaur Ji have always reposed their faith in art’s therapeutic role in instilling values, revolutionising opinions and translating common man’s experiences.
