A person was beaten to death with a helmet in a drunken fight in Sector 17.

Chandigarh Police said the deceased has been identified as Abhishek Vij, who was a resident of Sector 24 and worked with a contractor on daily wages.

A 36-year-old man was beaten to death with a helmet by two youths during a drunken brawl near the Parade Ground in Sector 17 in the early hours of Tuesday.

Solving the case within 24 hours, the Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police arrested the accused, identified as Vijay Kumar alias Shintu, 28, of Hallomajra and Hari, 19, of Pipliwala Town, Manimajra.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Abhishek Vij, who was a resident of Sector 24 and worked as a daily wage laborer with a contractor.

A passerby saw Abhishek lying injured on the road around 4 am and informed the police control room. He was taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he died.

According to police, in CCTV footage obtained from the spot, Abhishek was seen drinking and dancing on the road with two people around 4 am. But an argument broke out between the three and the other two hit Abhishek repeatedly on his face with the helmet, causing serious injuries. Investigators said Abhishek punched the accused, but both of them subdued him.

Upon contacting Abhishek's family, police learned from his wife that he had been drinking at home till around 11 pm before leaving the house in his Hyundai i10, which was recovered near the crime scene.

Police have registered a case against the accused under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 17 police station.
