Chandigarh,9 may

A Group Home has been constructed in Sector 31 Chandigarh by the Chandigarh Administration for the persons recovered from Mental illness (MI), Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Department of Social Welfare had issued a public notice for inviting applications from the interested Parents/ Guardians for admission of their wards in Group Home upto 10.04.2025. The Department has received 33 applications for admission in Group Home.

The first batch of eligible applicants including EWS applicants has been referred to designated medical institutions—namely, the Mental Health Institute, Sector-32 (for persons recovered from Mental illness) and the Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Sector-31 (for persons received from Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)) for 45 days medical assessment, which commenced on 07.05.2025.

This assessment aims to evaluate the medical and psychological suitability of individuals who have applied for residential care under the Group Home. A multidisciplinary team comprising psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and medical officers will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to ensure appropriate and supportive placement for the residents.

Additionally, the staff deputed at the institutions can observe whether the applicant requires minimal or no assistance with activities of daily living, such as dressing, eating, and grooming etc.

After successfully completing the 45 days medical assessment, eligible applicants will be enrolled in a 45 days day-care program at the Group Home to help them become familiar with the environment.
