The Centre for South Asian Studies and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Languages at Desh Bhagat University jointly commemorated Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, paying tribute to millions affected by the Partition of India in 1947.
The event was graced by Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh, Pro-Chancellor Dr. Tajinder Kaur, Sr. Advocate Hardev Singh, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Harsh Sadawarti, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Dr. Amarjit Singh, and other senior university officials. In his keynote address, Dr. Amarjit Singh provided a nuanced account of Punjab’s socio-political and cultural landscape before and during Partition. He described an era of interfaith harmony and shared celebrations, noting the significant landholding and economic influence of Sikh and Hindu minorities in West Punjab. Dr. Singh also discussed the intensifying communal tensions, the plight of minorities during mass migration, and the efforts of Premier Sir Khizar Hayat Khan Tiwana’s Unionist Party to maintain peace amidst growing unrest. Highlighting the mission of the newly established Centre for South Asian Studies, Dr. Singh emphasized its role in advancing scholarly research on South Asia, particularly Punjab’s cultural heritage, and in promoting informed dialogue on the region’s complex history. The programme was conducted by Dr. Renu Sharma and the vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Ram Singh Gurna.
