Samantha: My identity as a woman will naturally influence all of my creative choices

Actress-producer Samantha Ruth Prabhu said that her identity as a woman naturally drives her to champion such narratives and emphasized the need for more female voices in Indian cinema.

As an actor, Samantha has portrayed strong, complex female characters in projects such as “The Family Man” Season 2, “Rangasthalam,” “Majili,” “Yashoda,” “ Mahanati,” and “Eega” to name a few.

Asked if as a producer, she is consciously trying to create more space for layered female narratives in Indian cinema, Samantha told: “My identity as a woman will naturally influence all of my creative choices and I'm proud of that.”

“I believe that our industry needs more of the female perspective. It's still incredibly male-dominated. I'm not saying that as a bad thing,” added Samantha, whose maiden production, “Subham,” is all set to light up the silver screen on May 9.

Country boat fishers in Seruthur and Vellapallam in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, remained ashore for the third consecutive day on Monday, protesting a mid-sea attack allegedly carried out by Sri Lankan sea pirates.

The attack occurred near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on May 2.

According to reports, over 20 fishermen from Vedaranyam, Seruthur, and Akkaraipettai, who ventured out in four groups, were assaulted by armed men suspected to be Sri Lankan pirates. The attackers looted fishing nets, equipment, and other valuables before fleeing.

Several injured fishermen are currently receiving treatment at Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital.

In protest, more than 600 country boats were anchored along the shore for the second day on Sunday, with fishers vowing to continue their strike until both the state and Union governments take concrete steps to ensure their safety at sea.

Iran revises port blast death toll to 57, arrests two over safety failures

Iran revised the death toll from a major explosion at its main commercial port late last month down to 57 from 70, while state television reported two arrests in connection with the blast.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted Hormozgan province's Chief Justice Mojtaba Qahremani as saying the updated figure for the April 26 blast at Shahid Rajaee Port includes 46 recovered and identified bodies and 11 people still missing.

Qahremani explained that the initial count was lowered after forensic examinations determined that some body parts collected separately belonged to the same individuals. A special working group has been established to follow up on the missing, he added.

State television reported separately on Sunday that two people, including a government official, had been arrested over the explosion.

'He will be out for 15 days', Chelsea coach gives Nkunku's injury update

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca provided an update on Christopher Nkunku, who missed out again on Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool after suffering an injury in training earlier this week, revealing that the striker will still be out for 10-15 days with an injury.

Chelsea boosted their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League with a 3-1 victory over champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

"Christo will be out for I think one week or two weeks, we are not sure. We will see. He will be out for the next ten to 15 days," Maresca said.

Nkunku is likely to be on his way out of Chelsea at the end of the season, so there is a chance he may have played his last game for the Blues already.

Cumulative rate cuts of 125-150 bps estimated in FY26: SBI report

Cumulative rate cuts of 125-150 bps estimated in FY26: SBI report

The benign inflationary patterns suggest an aggressive rate cut trajectory by the Reserve Bank of India, with key policy rate likely to breach the ‘Neutral’ rate by March 2026, an SBI Research report said on Monday.

A cumulative rate cut of 125-150 bps is estimated in FY26 in the best case scenario with inflation to breach 3 per cent consistently for next three months barring any food price shock/heatwave, the report mentioned.

“With multi-year low inflation in March and benign inflation expectations going forward, we expect rate cuts of 75 basis points in June and August (H1) and another 50 bps cut in H2 — cumulative cuts of 125 bps going forward while 25 bps rate cut has already been initiated in February (that could put the terminal rate at 5.0-5.25 per cent by March 2026),” the SBI report projected.

“However, we feel, jumbo cuts of 50 bps, could be more effective than secular 25 bps tranches spread over the horizon,” it added.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Indian time) announced a new 100 per cent tariff on foreign films, stating that the movie industry in America is "dying a very fast death," which, according to him, is posing a national security threat.

He accused other countries of offering all sorts of incentives and drawing filmmakers and studios away from the US.

"Industry in America is dying a very fast death. Other countries are offering all sorts of the movie incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood and many other areas within the USA are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other nations and, therefore, a national security threat," he posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.
