US reports over 800 measles cases in 2025

The United States has reported 884 confirmed measles cases so far this year, marking a sharp increase compared to the previous year, according to the latest data released by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

So far in 2025, 11 measles outbreaks have been recorded nationwide. The CDC defines an outbreak as three or more related cases. Confirmed cases have been reported across 30 US jurisdictions, with 94 hospitalisations and three deaths attributed to the disease.

This year's measles case count represents a significant rise from 2024, when the country reported a total of 285 measles cases.

The CDC emphasises that the best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine are highly effective in preventing the disease, news agency reported.

According to the World Health Organisation, Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted by respiratory droplets and direct contact. Measles spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. It can cause severe disease, complications, and even death.

CARS24 lays off nearly 200 employees in restructuring exercise

Autotech platform CARS24 has laid off nearly 200 employees across various functions, as part of a restructuring exercise to meet long-term goals.

The e-commerce platform for pre-owned vehicles said this is a “tough moment”.

“Over the past few weeks, we have had to make the difficult decision to part ways with around 200 of our teammates across various functions. Every person impacted gave this company their time, energy, and belief. That matters deeply, and we are genuinely grateful,” said Vikram Chopra, co-founder and CEO of Cars24, in a blog post.

He denied this decision as an exercise to reduce costs but “about aligning the team and structure with our long-term goals, and correcting where we’ve lost focus.”

Cars24 offers a wide range of services, including buying and selling of pre-owned cars, financing, insurance, driver-on-demand and more.

Even short-term antibiotic use may cause resistance in gut bacteria

Even short-term antibiotic use may cause resistance in gut bacteria

As antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a global health concern, with millions of deaths occurring each year due to it, a new study showed how even a short period of antibiotic use can lead to persistent resistance in human gut bacteria.

Researchers from the Stanford University in the US focused their study on ciprofloxacin -- used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body.

They showed that ciprofloxacin can lead to resistance that can emerge independently across diverse species and continue for more than 10 weeks.

AMR is widely driven by excessive and inappropriate antibiotic use.

Previously studies have relied on in vitro experiments and animal models to understand AMR. But, the new study, published in the journal Nature, performed a longitudinal metagenomic study to explain how resistance evolves in 60 humans.

Indian stock markets extend recovery this week amid geopolitical tensions

Indian stock markets extend recovery this week amid geopolitical tensions

The Indian stock markets extended their recovery for yet another week, registering nearly a one per cent gain amid a phase of consolidation.

After an initial surge, the benchmarks traded in a narrow range through the middle of the week, before witnessing profit-taking in the final session. Ultimately, the Nifty and Sensex ended at 24,039.35 and 79,212.53 respectively.

According to analysts, global market stability, driven by ongoing discussions between the United States and its trade partners on new trade agreements, helped ease concerns about the impact of tariffs on global commerce.

“This, coupled with renewed foreign institutional investor (FII) inflows, bolstered market sentiment. However, rising geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan — following a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir — sparked investor caution and led to some profit-booking,” said Ajit Mishra–SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd.

Centre directs airlines to ensure passenger comfort

Centre directs airlines to ensure passenger comfort

To ensure continued passenger comfort, safety and regulatory compliance, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday directed all airline operators to implement enhanced passenger handling measures with an immediate effect.

In the light of the recent international airspace closures and overflight restrictions, several flight routes have been significantly altered, leading to extended flight durations and the possibility of technical stops.

According to the DGCA advisory, passengers must be proactively informed about route changes, extended travel times, and any technical halts during their journey.

This communication should occur at check-in, boarding, and via digital alerts.

“Airlines are required to revise catering based on the actual block time, ensuring adequate food, hydration, and special meal availability throughout the flight, including any technical stopovers,” said the advisory.
