South Korea: DP candidate Lee's lawyer denies all charges in trial over misusing public funds

South Korean Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung's lawyer on Tuesday denied all charges related to allegations that Lee misused public funds for personal purposes during his term as the governor of Gyeonggi province.

The attorney's denial came during the third preparatory hearing of Lee's trial at the Suwon District Court, which the candidate did not attend.

Lee is accused of using 106.5 million won ($77,800) from his corporate card and provincial government funds to pay for food and other goods while serving as governor from 2018 to 2021.

"The defendant has not colluded in the crime, nor did he give orders (to do so)," Lee's lawyer said, claiming the indictment was "illegal" as the police had previously decided to not transfer the case to the prosecution.

The report underscores Bengaluru's leadership in AI development talent, stating that it has the most AI-related professionals in India, placing it on par with established US clusters like San Francisco and New York.

Global family offices are most likely to increase their exposure in their investment portfolios to India and China over the next 12 months and India has scored far better on the list, according to the '2025 Global Family Office' report by UBS.

More than a quarter (28 per cent) of family offices are planning to increase their exposure to India over the next 12 months while almost a fifth (18 per cent) are planning to increase exposure to China, the report mentioned, clearing indicating the robust macro-economic indicators and strong domestic growth in India.

"Middle Eastern family offices were the most likely to increase exposure to India," the report further stated. Middle Eastern family offices, followed by those in Europe, were the most likely to increase exposure to India.

The Rajasthan Education Department has suspended four teachers for gross negligence in handling answer sheets of the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE), citing serious lapses in confidentiality and evaluation protocol.

The suspensions were ordered late Monday by Ashish Modi, Director of the Education Directorate, Bikaner, following reports of mismanagement during the ongoing evaluation process.

Two of the suspended teachers are from Alwar district, while the other two are from the Didwana-Kuchaman area in Nagaur district of the state.

In Alwar, Omprakash Gai Saini, a senior mathematics teacher at Government Higher Secondary School, Railway Station, reportedly left RBSE Secondary Examination answer sheets unattended in front of interns during evaluation.

The recent directive by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to install "Sugar Boards" in schools is an essential public health measure that also aligns with global nutrition goals, said health experts on Tuesday.

Amid increasing cases of diabetes and obesity among young children, the CBSE, last week, instructed over 24,000 affiliated schools across India to establish sugar boards.

The Sugar Boards will provide essential information, including recommended sugar intake, the sugar content in commonly consumed foods (such as junk food and cold drinks), health risks associated with high sugar consumption, and healthier dietary alternatives.

“This initiative educates children about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption, which is a major contributor to childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes. By clearly displaying recommended sugar intake and the sugar content in common foods, the boards promote awareness and healthier choices,” Dr Naval Vikram, Professor of Medicine, at AIIMS, New Delhi, told.

Bodies of three out of eight youngsters who were feared drowned in the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh’s Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district have been recovered, police said on Tuesday.

Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) continued the search for the remaining youth.

Bodies of Vaddi Rajesh (15), his brother Vaddi Mahesh (15) and Subbitha Paul Abhishek (18) were recovered in the morning.

A group of 11 youngsters drowned while taking a bath in the river near Kamini Lanka in Mummidivaram mandal on Monday.

While three youth managed to come out, the remaining were washed away.

India-made cars gain traction in Japanese market

Maruti Suzuki and Honda Cars India have clocked a robust increase in exports to the Japanese market, reflecting the improving quality and acceptance of India-made cars in developed markets.

According to figures compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), India’s car exports to Japan jumped to $616.45 million in the first nine months (April-December) of 2024-25, which represents a close to 3-fold jump over the $220.62 million worth exports in full financial year of 2023-24.

The Maruti Suzuki India is the biggest exporter its off-roader sport utility vehicle (SUV) Jimny to Japan. Mexico, Australia, and South Africa are currently the top four export markets for this car.

This is the second SUV after the Fronx that the company is exporting to its parent company in Japan. The company exports its Fronx SUVs to Japan from its Guajart plant with the consignments being shipped out from the Pipavav Port in the state.

IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal sells 5.8 pc stake worth Rs 11,928 crore

Interglobe Aviation, the operator of IndiGo Airlines, saw its stock slipping nearly 3 per cent on Tuesday after its co-founder Rakesh Gangwal offloaded 2.26 crore shares worth nearly Rs 11,928 crore in a block deal.

The block sale constituted 5.8 per cent of Gangwal’s stake in the leading budget airline, according to multiple reports. Gangwal had resigned from the board of InterGlobe Aviation in 2022 and remained one of IndiGo’s largest shareholders.

The floor price for the transaction has been pegged at Rs 5,260 per share, representing a discount of around 3 per cent to the last closing price, according to reports.

The stock, however, recovered from early losses and was trading at Rs 5,318.00 apiece, down 1.88 per cent around 11 am.

Four illegal Bangladeshi migrants, including a minor, were apprehended in Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

The illegal migrants were identified as Mohd. Asad Ali, 44, Nasima Begum, 40, Naim Khan, 18 and Asha Moni, 13, all hailing from Farooq Bazar Ajwatari P.O., Gongarhat, Phulbari Kurigram, Bangladesh.

In a crackdown against illegal migrants residing in India under the Union Home Ministry's campaign to deport illegal migrants, the team of Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Delhi's South West district gathered the intelligence and apprehended the illegal migrants, Deputy Commissioner of Police South West District, New Delhi, said in a statement.
