Huge boots to fill within the lineup: Keshav Maharaj reacts to Klaasen's retirement

South African spinner Keshav Maharaj reacted to his long-time teammate Heinrich Klaasen's decision to bid adieu to international cricket, saying the Proteas batter's retirement leaves huge boots to fill within the South African lineup.

One of the most destructive batters of the modern era, Klaasen called time on his international career that spanned just seven years, having debuted in 2018. The 33-year-old played a pivotal role in South Africa’s white-ball resurgence, helping them reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, as well as the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Maharaj paid tribute to the retiring batter, recognising both his influence on South African cricket and the significant void he leaves behind.

"He's probably one of, if not the most feared batsman, especially in the white-ball game these days. Yeah, it's sad to know that he's walking away," ICC quoted Maharaj, who is preparing for the World Test Championship Final, as saying.

Vaccination may play a significant role in preventing hearing loss in children and adolescents, according to a study that identified 26 infectious pathogens that can potentially cause hearing loss.

Over 1.5 billion people worldwide are affected by some degree of hearing loss. While it is often linked to ageing, a lesser known but significant cause is infections contracted during childhood and adolescence, many of which are preventable.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 60 per cent of childhood hearing loss could be prevented through public health measures such as vaccination against rubella and certain forms of meningitis.

Nifty Bank hits record high, crosses 56,000 for 1st time ahead of RBI MPC

The Nifty Bank index touched a record high of 56,161.40 on Tuesday morning, crossing the 56,000 mark for the first time ever.

The surge was driven by strong buying in select banks as investors showed optimism ahead of a possible interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) later this week.

However, the early gains didn’t last. By mid-morning, the index had slipped slightly, down 0.1 per cent as some investors booked profits and heavyweight banks showed weakness.

Major lenders like ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank dragged the index lower, falling up to 0.9 per cent.

Australian scientists use underwater robots to explore remote reefs in South Pacific expedition

Australian scientists are using cutting-edge underwater robots to explore remote and largely uncharted reef systems in the South Pacific, the University of Sydney said on Tuesday.

As part of a major international expedition, Australian scientists are mapping deep-sea habitats and biodiversity near Norfolk Island, an isolated Australian territory 1,600 km northeast of Sydney, one of the South Pacific's most ecologically important regions, according to a university press release.

Its location and mix of tropical and temperate ecosystems make it key to tracking species shifts and climate change impacts, the release said.

Equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors, the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles are capturing thousands of images to create 3D maps of the seafloor and document marine life in unprecedented detail, it said, adding underwater robots serve as the eyes and hands of scientists, safely exploring deep-sea areas beyond the reach of human divers, reports news agency.
