Afghan police destroy nearly 30 tonnes of illicit drugs

Afghan police set on fire 29.8 tonnes of illegal drugs seized during a series of operations in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, according to a statement issued by the office of the Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics.

The confiscated substances included 1,442 kg of methamphetamine (ICE), 588 kg of heroin, 15,714 kg of hashish, 460 kg of opium poppy, and other narcotics, along with materials used in drug production, said the statement issued late Monday, News Agency reported.

The contraband was uncovered during counter-narcotics operations in Jalalabad city and various districts of the province, it said.

Without furnishing details on whether the narcotics had been discovered, the statement noted that 2,586 individuals were arrested for smuggling, purchasing, and selling the illicit drugs, and their dossiers were referred to the judiciary for further investigation.

While the US sources cheap medicines ranging from everyday painkillers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen to critical antibiotics and chemotherapy agents from China, increasing dependency on the country may introduce serious risks, according to a report.

Citing the US trade data, the report in US political website The Hill stated that America “imports 95 per cent of ibuprofen, 91 per cent of hydrocortisone, 70 per cent of acetaminophen and up to 45 per cent of penicillin from China”.

The report flagged diminished oversight and questionable product quality on products from China and suggested mitigating the exposure with a comprehensive strategy.

It noted how “quality control issues associated with Chinese-made generics continue to raise alarm”.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Head Constable of Delhi Police while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in exchange for not registering an FIR against the complainant, an official of the probe agency said on Tuesday.

Head Constable Rajkumar Meena, posted at Police Station Ashok Vihar, was booked on Monday, the official said.

It was alleged that a Sub-Inspector (SI) and the accused Head Constable demanded Rs 3 lakh from the complainant for not registering an FIR against him.

After negotiation, the accused Head Constable agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant for closing the complaint pending against him.

The GST department has issued three orders to Eternal, the company that owns the Zomato and Blinkit brands, imposing a total tax demand of more than Rs 40 crore, including interest and penalties.

According to the company, the Joint Commissioner, Bengaluru, issued these directives for the period from July 2017 to March 2020.

"The Company has received 3 orders on 25 August 2025 for the period July 2017 to March 2020 passed by Joint Commissioner, Appeals-4, Bengaluru, confirming total demand of GST of Rs 17,19,11,762 with interest of Rs 21,42,14,791 and penalty of Rs 1,71,91,177, " Eternal said in an exchange filing.

Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has sounded an alert in north coastal Andhra Pradesh as heavy rain started lashing the region under the impact of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further in the next two days, the APSDMA said on Tuesday.

Under its impact, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds with a speed of 30- 40 kmph are likely at isolated places.

Vodafone Idea shares dipped 9.19 per cent, and have declined more than 16 per cent year-to-date.

The decline came after Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, said there are no plans to provide additional relief beyond what has already been offered, according to multiple media reports.

According to the minister, the government had converted a significant portion of the company's debt into equity. The minister said in media reports that the government has taken all feasible measures and that there is no discussion or plan to alter anything beyond what has been done.
