Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday unequivocally said that gangsters, smugglers, criminals and other anti-social elements have no place on the sacred land of Punjab and they will soon be wiped out from the state.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday handed over cheques of financial assistance worth Rs 1 crore (each) to the family members of five cops who were martyred during the line of duty.

In a major blow to trans-border smuggling in Punjab, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has apprehended two drug smugglers and recovered 4 kg heroin from their possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday.

Those arrested have been identified as Karanpal Singh (37) and Ranjit Singh (36), both hailing from border villages situated in the jurisdiction of Khem Karan in Tarn Taran district.

Apart from recovering a big haul of heroin, police teams have also impounded their motorcycle, which they were riding.

The Mann Government is taking a stringent stand against drugs and drug trafficking. Over the past several days, large-scale police actions have been taking place across Punjab against drugs, with continuous meetings involving the Chief Minister, ministers, and senior administrative officials.

On Saturday, the Punjab Government intensified its campaign against drugs with the first meeting of the five-member sub-committee led by Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. The meeting was attended by other committee members, including Cabinet Ministers Aman Arora, Tarunpreet Singh Sondh, Dr. Balbir Singh, and Laljit Singh Bhullar, and discussions were held in detail on all issues related to drugs. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and Chief Secretary KAP Sinha were also present at the meeting.

Harpal Cheema also got responsibility for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Nawanshahr, Ropar, Tarn Taran, and Hoshiarpur districts. Meanwhile, Aman Arora has been entrusted with Ludhiana, Patiala, Kapurthala, Mohali, Amritsar, and Jalandhar.

Gangster attempts to escape; sustains bullet injury in Punjab

Gangster Malkiat, alias Maxi, on Saturday sustained bullet injury while attempting to escape from the police custody near Ghagar bridge on Zirakpur-Ambala Highway in Dera Bassi in Punjab, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here.

The gangster, a resident of Rodala village in Rajasansi Amritsar, is an operative of foreign-based terrorist Goldy Brar and gangster Goldy Dhillon and was running an extortion racket on their behalf.

Recently, Maxi and his accomplice Sandeep, alias Deep, were arrested by the Patiala Police in the Arms Act case.

Subsequently, both were brought on production warrant from the Patiala jail by Mohali Police on Friday in an extortion case wherein the accused had targeted a Mohali-based property dealer and demanded Rs 50 lakh extortion money in January.

Announcing a crusade against the menace of drugs, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday asked the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police to make Punjab drug free state in coming three months.

Taking part in deliberations in a meeting with Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police, the Chief Minister said that this is a historic moment as the state government has adopted zero tolerance policy against drugs and is launching a crusade against this menace. He said that Punjab Police has a long and glorious history of tackling with the hostile law and order situations adding he expressed hope that the Police will uphold its glorious tradition and make the state completely drug free with the active support and cooperation of general public. Bhagwant Singh Mann also said that the state government will set up special courts to ensure speedy trial of drugs cases and ensure conviction of the culprits.
