Mercury touches new high in Rajasthan as scorching heat grips state

Most parts of Rajasthan continued to reel under a severe heatwave on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued heat alerts for several districts.

The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur issued an 'Orange Alert' for severe heat in Sriganganagar and Bikaner for Monday, while a 'Yellow Alert' has been sounded in nine other cities of the state.

In the past 24 hours, Sriganganagar emerged as the hottest place in India, with the mercury soaring to 47.4 degree Celsius, up by 2.8 degree Celsius from Saturday.

The heatwave here began early on Sunday morning and persisted late into the night, with the border areas witnessing the brunt of the extreme weather.

A woman and her two-year-old grandson died in a tragic road accident in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Monday, officials said. The accident sparked public outrage and a road blockade that lasted for hours.

The incident occurred in the Tisri police station area, where Kaushalya Devi, a resident of Gumgi village, and her grandson Riyansh were crushed by a speeding tractor.

According to eyewitnesses, Kaushalya Devi was returning home after visiting a local doctor for her grandson’s treatment when the tractor, reportedly out of control, veered off the road, hit an electric pole, and overturned, landing on the two victims.

Locals rushed to the scene and managed to pull the woman and child from beneath the vehicle, but both had already succumbed to their injuries. The tractor driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Army, other forces conduct joint ops in Manipur; 23 militants held, 40 weapons recovered

In a series of joint operations in Manipur, the Army and other central and state security forces have arrested 23 extremists of different outfits and recovered 40 types of arms, grenades, ammunition and other war-like stores from eight districts, officials said on Monday.

A Defence spokesman said that the well-coordinated joint operations resulted in the arrest of 23 cadres from various hill and valley-based militant outfits.

He said that the joint operations were conducted during the past few days in the districts of Kangpokpi, Thoubal, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, Jiribam, Imphal East and Imphal West.

The Army during the operations used specialised resources like Explosive Detection Dogs.

From Imphal East district, the security forces recovered five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) connected in tandem with a total of 35 kg of explosives.

At least one person and nine others were injured after falling from a moving local train near the Mumbra railway station close to the Maharashtra capital Mumbai.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) confirmed that of the ten passengers travelling from Kasara to CSMT, who fell from the train, one has died.

“One person has died in this incident and nine people have been admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, for treatment,” said the Thane Municipal Corporation-run hospital.

“At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital Kalwa, local leader Sanjay Vaghule, Disaster Management Officer Yasin Tadvi, Medical Superintendent Dr Malgaonkar and the Police Inspector of Kalwa Police Station are present, and the team of doctors of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital is treating everyone on a war footing,” said the TMC-run hospital.

Gujarat faces a delay in monsoon and that has exacerbated concerns over depleting water levels across the state. With the monsoon yet to make landfall, the average water level in Gujarat’s 206 reservoirs has dipped to just 44.89 per cent, prompting renewed fears of a prolonged dry spell, as per officials.

Particularly alarming are the figures from Kutch, Saurashtra, and North Gujarat, where the water levels have fallen below 30 per cent.

Data show that 20 reservoirs in Kutch are currently at just 20.78 per cent capacity, 141 reservoirs in Saurashtra are at 28.47 per cent, and 15 in North Gujarat are at 29.56 per cent capacity.

While a handful of reservoirs still hold adequate water, the broader picture remains grim.

Maoists detonated an improvised explosive device that claimed the life of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunje of Konta Division in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

State Home Minister Vijay Sharma confirmed the death and expressed his profound grief. He said Giripunje was a 2013 batch officer and a brave soldier.

Several other soldiers on patrol were injured in the blast. Reports indicate that Konta Town Inspector Sonal Gwala sustained injuries, and security forces have been deployed to the area to secure the site and provide reinforcement.

According to reports and police sources, ASP Giripunje was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries. The attack took place following a Bharat Bandh call given by the Maoists on June 10.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next few days, even as several interior districts continue to reel under above-normal temperatures.

According to the RMC, districts including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore are likely to witness heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Puducherry is also expected to receive isolated heavy showers during this period.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who ordered a magisterial inquiry into the tragedy, has mandated that Deputy Commissioner Jagadeesha G. submit the report within 15 days.

Jagadeesha has issued a notice directing the injured persons to arrive at the magisterial court auditorium, located within the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Bengaluru, between 11 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. to record their statements.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two accused, including a former Senior Manager of the Dimapur branch of a nationalised bank and the owner of a Dimapur-based private company, for indulging in acts of alleged bribery, official sources said.

The CBI sources said that the central probe agency has arrested the then Senior Manager, Punjab National Bank, Dimapur, from Guwahati (Assam) and a proprietor of a Dimapur (Nagaland) based private company from Dimapur for having indulged in acts of alleged bribery.

ED raids 18 locations in Mithi River scam, seizes assets worth over Rs 1.25 crore

The Mumbai Zonal Office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive search operations at 18 locations across Mumbai, Kochi and Thrissur in connection with an ongoing money laundering investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The case pertains to the alleged Rs 65 crore ‘Mithi River desilting scam’.

According to ED statement issued on Saturday, the searches targeted the office and residential premises linked to key individuals including BMC Engineer Prashant Ramgude, BMC contractor Bhupendra Purohit, M/s Matprop Technical Service Pvt Ltd, Jay Joshi (Director, M/s Virgo Specialties Pvt Ltd), Ketan Kadam (Controller, M/s Woder India LLP), and close associates Santino Rocco Morea and actor Dino Morea.

The ED initiated its probe based on an FIR registered by Azad Maidan Police Station, Mumbai, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860. The FIR was filed against 13 individuals and entities accused of causing a wrongful loss of over Rs 65 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said the statement.
