Nothing comes closer to receiving Arjuna Award, says Indian hockey star Jarmanpreet Singh

The Indian men's hockey team defender Jarmanpreet Singh expressed his elation after receiving the Arjuna Award from President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Friday and said, "Nothing comes closer to this feeling". Jarmanpreet was instrumental in the Indian team's second successive bronze medal finish at the Olympics in Paris last year. India beat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match, coming back from a goal down.

The Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh was also awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award along with fellow Paris Olympics and Paralympics medallists - Manu Bhaker (shooting) and Praveen Kumar (para-athlete) and World Chess Champion Gukesh D. at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Jarmanpreet said this recognition will inspire youngsters to play hockey and dedicated his accolade to his family and supporters.

India skipper Niki Prasad said her team’s objective is to win the 2025 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup and successfully defend the title they won under Shafali Verma’s leadership in 2023. India are the defending champions in the tournament starting in Malaysia on Saturday, after having won the first edition in South Africa in 2023. They also come in on the back of winning the inaugural U19 Women’s Asia Cup in Malaysia last month.

“The objective is very clear. To win this tournament and successfully defend the title which India won in the previous edition. It also happened to be the first edition of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. We are here to play a brand of cricket which will help us win the trophy and make our country and supporters proud,” said Niki in an ICC statement.

England, runners-up from the 2023 edition, are looking to go one step further in 2025. “As a team, we are looking to play with positive intent throughout the competition, along with enjoying the ride and taking every opportunity that is thrown at us to maximise the experience and obviously with the intent to win!” said captain Abi Norgrave.

In the tournament’s short history, it will be the first time four venues will host matches.

WPL 2025 will begin with BCA Stadium in Baroda, where the Gujarat Giants (GG) will face defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on February 14, followed by Mumbai Indians opening their campaign against Delhi Capitals on February 15.

Ireland have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during their third and final ODI of their recently concluded series against India at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement that as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Kim Cotton and Akshay Totre, along with third umpire Virender Sharma and fourth umpire Vrinda Rathi. Match Referee G S Lakshmi of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Ireland was found to be two overs short of the required target, even after accounting for time allowances.
