Seven-Day Workshop on Gatka at Desh Bhagat University

Desh Bhagat University, in collaboration with the Punjab Gatka Association, successfully organized a seven-day workshop on Gatka at the DBU campus. The workshop aimed at promoting the rich cultural heritage of Punjab, saw enthusiastic participation from over 400 students from various disciplines.The workshop provided students with the opportunity to learn the basic skills of Gatka, a traditional Indian martial art, and to understand its origins and development within Punjab, India, and globally. This event highlighted the global recognition of Gatka and the significant role Punjabis play in both the economic and cultural spheres worldwide.The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Virinder Singh, Adviser to the Chancellor, who emphasized the importance of Gatka in Indian martial arts and its historical significance. Dr. Singh, with his extensive knowledge of Punjab and Indian history, provided a compelling introduction to the martial art's rich background.The closing ceremony was graced by the Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh, and the Pro Chancellor, Dr. Tajinder Kaur, who served as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor, respectively. They honored the trainers from the Punjab Gatka Association and awarded certificates to the participants. Dr. Kaur particularly praised the high participation of female students and encouraged them to continue engaging in Gatka and other sports activities at the university. Dr. Pravin Kumar, Director of Sports, expressed gratitude to the Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, trainers, and participants. He also acknowledged the faculty of the Department of Physical Education and Sports for their dedicated efforts in ensuring the event's success and assured that such workshops will be regularly organized at the university.
