India’s $25 billion pharma and electronics exports remain secure despite new US tariffs

Citing India's higher tariffs on American goods, US President Donald Trump has declared a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports. However, shipments worth over $25 billion, primarily of smartphones and pharmaceuticals, are currently exempted from these higher tariffs.

Pharmaceuticals and electronics (primarily smartphones) accounted for $10.5 billion and $14.6 billion of India's total exports to the US in FY25, respectively.

Trump has not yet included these key industries in the new tariffs that are slated to come into effect from August 1.

South Korean firms likely to announce new US investment plans

South Korean firms likely to announce new US investment plans

South Korean companies could announce new investment plans in the United States as a follow-up to the tariff deal between Seoul and Washington, experts said on Thursday, with the anticipation for such new commitments growing ahead of an envisioned summit between the leaders of the two countries.

While no specific details have been confirmed, potential announcements would align with the deal that lowers tariffs on South Korean exports to the United States to 15 percent, down from the originally planned 25 percent, in exchange for a US$350 billion investment package pledged by Seoul.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will hold a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House in two weeks, during which the leaders would likely discuss implementation and follow-up steps, reports news agency.

Rain brings relief from heat, Delhi-NCR breathes cleanest July air in decade

Rain brings relief from heat, Delhi-NCR breathes cleanest July air in decade

Continuous rainfall in Delhi-NCR on Thursday has brought much-needed respite from the sweltering heat, while simultaneously delivering a remarkable improvement in air quality.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), July 2025 has recorded the cleanest air in over a decade, with Air Quality Index (AQI) readings falling below 50 in several parts of the region -- a level categorised as “very good”.

This drastic improvement is largely attributed to the frequent rain showers over the past week, which have significantly reduced dust and airborne pollutants. However, while the rains have cleansed the atmosphere, they have also led to waterlogging and traffic congestion, posing a major challenge for the municipal authorities and daily commuters.

Covid and flu viruses can wake up breast cancer cells spread in lungs: Study

Common respiratory infections, including Covid-19 and influenza, can awaken dormant breast cancer cells that have spread to the lungs, setting the stage for new metastatic tumours, according to a new study.

The findings published in the journal Nature, based on mouse studies as well as meta-analysis of human patients, support research showing increases in death and metastatic lung disease among cancer survivors infected with SARS-CoV-2 -- the virus that causes Covid.

"Our findings indicate that individuals with a history of cancer may benefit from taking precautions against respiratory viruses, such as vaccination when available, and discussing any concerns with their health care providers," said Julio Aguirre-Ghiso, from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, US.
