Reciprocal tariffs: Global economists warn of impending US recession

Global brokerages and economists have warned an impending US recession after factoring in the impact of reciprocal tariffs announced by the Donald Trump administration.

According to JPMorgan Chase & Co, “We now expect real GDP to contract under the weight of the tariffs, and for the full year (4Q/4Q) we now look for real GDP growth of -0.3 per cent, down from 1.3 per cent previously,”

The bank’s chief US economist Michael Feroli said in a note to clients that the forecast contraction in economic activity is expected to depress hiring and over time to lift the unemployment rate to 5.3 per cent.

Feroli expects the US Federal Reserve to begin cutting its benchmark interest rate in June and proceed with rate cuts at each subsequent meeting through January next year.

Hyundai Motor to freeze vehicle prices in US through early June

Hyundai Motor will freeze prices of all new vehicles sold in the United States through early June, a move aimed at easing consumer concerns over rising costs following Washington's imposing of 25 per cent duties on all imported vehicles, the automaker's American subsidiary said.

Hyundai Motor America (HMA) said that any new Hyundai vehicle purchased until June 2 will be protected from Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) increases regardless of changes in market conditions under the company's Customer Assurance programme, reports news agency.

Washington's measure of imposing 25 per cent tariffs on imported cars went into effect this week, part of U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive drive to reduce America's trade deficits and bolster domestic manufacturing.

"We know consumers are uncertain about the potential for rising prices and we want to provide them with some stability in the coming months," Jose Munoz, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Hyundai Motor, said. "Our MSRP commitment is just one part of our multifaceted effort to provide great vehicles to American consumers."

India-US trade negotiations key to boost stock market sentiment: Experts

The new financial year (FY26) has commenced on a subdued note, largely driven by the imposition of higher-than-anticipated tariffs by the US, market experts said on Saturday, adding that any constructive developments arising from the ongoing India–US bilateral trade negotiations could serve as a supportive catalyst for the market.

Sectors like IT and metals have underperformed relative to the broader market, reflecting growing concerns over the outlook for the US economy and potential retaliatory trade actions by other countries.

According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, investors are expected to closely monitor any countermeasures implemented by global trade partners, which could further exacerbate geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

This cautious sentiment is reflected in the sustained rally in gold and bond prices, underscoring a pronounced shift toward safe-haven assets.

In an effort to address the harms and criminalities being committed through widespread circulation of misinformation and deepfakes powered by AI, the government has once again advised social media platforms on countering unlawful content, including malicious “synthetic media” to curb deepfakes and promptly remove harmful content online.

The IT Ministry has conducted multiple consultations with industry stakeholders/social media platforms to discuss the challenges identified in combating deepfakes and has issued advisories time to time, through which the intermediaries were reminded about compliance with their due-diligence obligations outlined under the IT Rules, 2021.

“The policies are aimed at ensuring a safe, trusted and accountable cyberspace for users in the country,” said Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, as a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

South Korean presidential office website closed after Yoon's ouster

South Korea's presidential office has suspended its official website following the Constitutional Court's ruling on former President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from office, a notice on the site showed on Saturday.

The website said that the service was "temporarily unavailable" as it is "undergoing maintenance," apologising to the public for causing inconvenience, news agency reported.

The notice appears to be a step taken following Friday's court decision to uphold the impeachment of Yoon and dismiss him as President over his martial law attempt last December.

On the same day, the presidential office in Yongsan lowered the flag bearing the official presidential emblem in front of the building, while ministries also removed photos of Yoon.

IPL 2025: Marsh, Markram & Miller carry LSG to 203/8, despite Pandya’s five-for

Openers Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram smashed fifties while David Miller applied finishing touches with a late cameo as the trio carried Lucknow Super Giants to 203/8 in their 20 overs against Mumbai Indians in match 16 of IPL 2025 at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Marsh capitalised on pace-on deliveries to hit 60 off 31 balls, his third fifty of the competition. After his fall, Markram stepped up to smash 53 off 38 balls, while Miller brought out the big hits in a 14-ball 27 and ensure LSG posted a 200-plus total for the second time.

For MI, who conceded 69 runs in power-play, Hardik Pandya led the way with the ball by picking up 5-36, his first five-for in T20 cricket. The MI skipper used the conditions very well by relying more on his slower balls to get his scalps and become the first-ever IPL captain to take a fifer.

IB woman officer suicide: Trouble mounts for absconding colleague as rape charges included

The Kerala Police, on the lookout for the absconding male colleague of a woman IB official, who ended her life by jumping in front of a train 12 days back, on Friday included charges of rape against him.

This fresh development came after the 24-year-old woman IB official's father gave crucial evidence against Sukanth Suresh, presently working at the Cochin International Airport and with whom she was in a relationship.

Suresh has been on the run since March 24, when the woman official ended her life by jumping in front of a speeding train in the state capital, after completing her night duty at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

After her parents revealed that their daughter was close to a colleague, the name of Suresh surfaced, and later, it was found out that she used to transfer her salary to him.

India has advantage over Asian peers after US tariff hikes: SBI

India has advantage over Asian peers after US tariff hikes: SBI

India;s exports to the US constitute only 4 per cent of its GDP so the direct impact of the 27 per cent hike in tariffs on Indian goods announced by President Donald Trump will have only a "limited" impact, according to an SBI Research report released on Friday.

At the same time, the tariffs levied on India are the lowest among its Asian peers, compared to 34 per cent on China, 36 per cent on Thailand, 32 per cent on Indonesia, and 46 per cent on Vietnam. This is expected to give India a comparative advantage over these countries and result in an increase in exports in some sectors over the long term, the report stated.

"We expect India will have a competitive advantage and export-oriented impact on various sectors," the SBI report said.
