One killed, nine missing in multiple cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi

One person was reportedly killed and at least nine people went missing in multiple cloudbursts overnight in Karsog division of Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, officials said on Tuesday.

The cloudbursts triggered flash floods that washed away many houses.

At least 41 people have been rescued by the district administration and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

According to reports, 10 houses and a bridge were swept away by floods in Kuklah. In Mandi district, the 16-MW Patikari Hydro-Electric Power Project has also been washed away.

The run-of-the-river power project is built on the Bakhli Khad, a left-bank tributary of the Beas river.

Temperature buildup in spray dryer may have caused blast at Telangana pharma unit

Temperature buildup in spray dryer may have caused blast at Telangana pharma unit

An explosion in a spray dryer machine is suspected to have caused Telangana’s worst industrial disaster at the pharmaceutical unit of Sigachi Industries at Pashamylaram near Hyderabad, claiming more than 30 lives.

While authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the blast, officials in the industries department believe that a massive temperature buildup in the spray dryer may have caused the explosion in the Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) drying unit.

A spray dryer turns a liquid or slurry into a dried powder by atomising it into a hot gas stream. As a chemical process in a spray dryer leads to a sharp rise in temperature, a bow air handler is used to regulate airflow and temperature.

Experts say the blow air handler has to be cleaned at regular intervals for the system to work effectively. They suspect that a lack of proper cleaning may have resulted in the temperature rising to the highest level in the spray dryer, and this could have triggered the explosion.

IISc Bangalore researchers develop simple, cost-effective sensor for detecting liver cancer

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed a simple sensor that is cost-effective and can enable faster detection of liver cancer.

The team focussed on the potential of terbium -- a rare earth metal -- to develop a unique luminescent probe that can sense the presence of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase.

While its core function is to break down a sugar acid called glucuronic acid, the enzyme also doubles as a critical biomarker for liver cancer.

An increase in beta-glucuronidase levels has been associated with the risk of colon, breast, and renal cancers, as well as infections of the urinary tract and AIDS.

‘Only high command can take decision’: Kharge on leadership change in Karnataka

Responding to rumours regarding leadership change in Karnataka, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Monday that no one can predict the high command’s decision, and it is the only body in the party that can decide about the issue.

"That is in the hands of the high command. Nobody can say what is going on. If any decision is to be made, it will be taken by the high command," said Kharge when asked about speculation of changes by October.

Kharge further reiterated that the high command alone has the authority to take such decisions. "It is left to their discretion. However, no one should indulge in creating unnecessary issues," he warned.

Congress General Secretary and Karnataka In-Charge Randeep Singh Surjewala dismissed the leadership change talks as a ‘figment of imagination’.

On June 26, Karnataka Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna stirred speculation by claiming that major changes would take place in the state after September, fueling rumours of internal conflict within the Congress.

The outlook for FY2026 remains strong as both government-led infrastructure projects and private housing construction continue to create steady demand for cement.
