A man who issued a death threat to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been arrested by a team from the North-West District Special Staff of the Delhi Police.

The accused was apprehended from Ghaziabad following swift investigative efforts after the threatening call was made late on Thursday night.

According to police officials, the threat call was made to the Ghaziabad Police Control Room (PCR) while the accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Shortly after the threat was received, the Delhi Police Control Room was alerted, and the matter was escalated due to the high-profile nature of the target.

India can become global leader in livestock exports, aim for 20 pc rise in FY26

India can position itself as a global leader in livestock exports, especially in value-added segments, and the industry must be more aspirational and aim for a 20 per cent increase in exports this fiscal (FY26), senior government officials have said.

In last fiscal (FY25), the overall exports of animal products stood at $5114.19 million, registering a growth of 12.56 per cent.

This was conveyed at the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) organised a workshop on “Exports of Livestock and their Value Added Products – Future Prospects and Way Forward” in the national capital.

269 million people lifted out of extreme poverty in India over 11 years: World Bank

In a significant feat under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visionary government, India has made key strides in the last decade in reducing its extreme poverty rate, which fell to 5.3 per cent in 2022–23 from 27.1 per cent in 2011–12, latest World Bank data has revealed.

About 75.24 million people were living in extreme poverty in India during 2022–23, a massive drop from 344.47 million in 2011–12.

According to the World Bank data, this means 269 million individuals were lifted out of extreme poverty over approximately 11 years.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, which collectively accounted for 65 per cent of India’s extreme poor in 2011–12, contributed to two-thirds of the overall decline in extreme poverty by 2022–23.

Sikkim landslide: 80 stranded tourists safely evacuated

At least 80 tourists stranded in the northern part of Sikkim due to inclement weather and landslides have been safely evacuated, an official said on Friday.

A total of four helicopter sorties were conducted from Pakyong Greenfield Airport to Chaten using MI-02, MI-49, and MI-39 helicopters, resulting in the evacuation of 80 individuals.

Among those evacuated, 63 persons were tourists, while 17 were locals. To ensure their further travel to Gangtok, the state government arranged state transport buses at the airport for the convenience of the evacuees.

In order to address an immediate health concern, a medical team from the Health and Family Welfare Department, Pakyong, was deployed at the airport to conduct basic health check-ups upon arrival.

Three members of a family, which includes husband, wife, and their only daughter, tried to commit suicide on Friday by consuming heavy doses of sleeping pills at Chandannagar in the Hooghly district of West Bengal.

Already, the mother, Sunita Das (83), has been declared dead. The father, Ekendranath Das (87), and his daughter, Sharmishtha Das (43), are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital in Chandannagar. While the daughter is completely out of danger now, the father is also recovering fast, confirmed an official of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate.

Initial investigation and the statement given by the daughter to the police revealed that although they were once in an affluent financial condition, the three members of the family had been reeling under an acute financial crisis for the past few years.

Mumbai: CBI arrests Naval area engineer for Rs 4.5 lakh bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Junior Engineer, Naval Officers Family Residential Area, Mumbai, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 4.5 lakh from a vendor for clearing his bills.

A case was registered on Thursday against the accused on the basis of a written complaint of the company representative, whose bills were pending.

The CBI said that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 5.5 lakh from the complainant for clearing the pending bills of his firm, and after negotiation, he finally agreed to accept Rs 4.5 lakh.

On receiving a complaint from the company owner, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4.5 lakh.

West Bengal: Man gets 7-year RI for raping minor daughter

A special court at Jangipur in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Friday sentenced a man, convicted of raping his minor daughter, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI).

The court also imposed a financial penalty of Rs 1,00,000 on the convict. In the event of non-payment of the penalty amount, his imprisonment term will be extended by one more year.

At the same time, the judge of the special court directed the West Bengal government to pay a compensation of Rs 2,00,000 to the victim.
