Paediatric thyroid cancer risk rises with early exposure to air, light pollution

Early-life exposure to small particle air pollution and outdoor artificial light at night could increase the risk of paediatric thyroid cancer, a new study led by researchers at Yale University in the US has suggested.

The team found a “significant association” between exposure to ambient fine particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) and outdoor artificial light at night (O-ALAN) and increased risk of papillary thyroid cancer in children and young adults up to 19 years old, according to the study published in Environmental Health Perspectives.

The exposures occurred during the perinatal stage of life, typically defined as the time from when pregnancy occurs up to a year after birth.

IPL 2025: Punjab Kings eye season double over wounded RCB in Sunday showdown

IPL 2025: Punjab Kings eye season double over wounded RCB in Sunday showdown

After dismantling Royal Challengers Bengaluru at their home turf on Friday, a high-flying Punjab Kings unit will look to complete a season double when the two teams clash again in Match 37 of the IPL 2025 on Sunday in New Chandigarh.

It’s been a swift turnaround for RCB, who have barely had time to recover from the hammering they received at home. In Friday’s rain-curtailed encounter in Bengaluru, their batting line-up fell apart ridiculously. Reduced to a 14-overs-per-side affair, RCB could only muster 95 for 9 - with Tim David’s gritty 50 not out being the lone bright spot.

The likes of Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar and Liam Livingstone failed to adapt to a two-paced pitch. Captain Patidar admitted after the match that quick wickets and lack of partnerships cost them dearly.

“We are installing automatic pumps and laying a 2.5-km pipe to prevent water collection under the bridge,” she said, during an inspection in which she was accompanied by Minister Parvesh Verma, responsible for irrigation, flood control and water.

Inspecting the provisions for rainwater inlet and pumping facilities at the colonial-era Minto Bridge, CM Gupta said the government is working in a time-bound manner and conducting checks in advance to “ensure that not even a drop of rainwater” gets collected during rains.

The IT hiring sector in India is projected to grow by 7-10 per cent in the first half of 2025, generating around 4-4.5 lakh new jobs, industry experts said on Friday.

India’s IT sector ended the fourth quarter of FY25 on a stable note by reporting a revenue growth of 1-3 per cent year-on-year, which indicates a cycle of measured expansion and changing global priorities.

"While this reflects that companies are showcasing a more targeted approach to global technology investments, the demand for digital transformation still continues to thrive," said Sunil Nehra, CEO-IT Staffing, FirstMeridian Business Services.
