ED arrests son-in-law of former Pearls Group chief in Rs 48,000 crore fraud case

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Delhi Zonal Office, arrested Harsatinder Pal Singh Hayer, the son-in-law of the late Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, in connection with the multi-crore Pearl Agro Corporation Limited (PACL) fraud case.

Hayer was detained under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. A Special Court (PMLA cases) has sent him to ED custody for further investigation.

The case dates back to an FIR filed by the CBI, BSFC, New Delhi, under Sections 120-B and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, against PACL India Limited, PGF Limited, and its directors, including Bhangoo. The accused were involved in operating fraudulent investment schemes, deceiving investors of around Rs 48,000 crore. These schemes promised high returns to investors, but in reality, the money was siphoned off by the company’s directors.

Two days after a man went missing in Thodupuzha near Kerala's Kochi, the police on Saturday arrested his former business partner and two others and recovered his body from a manhole at a catering warehouse.

Bju Joseph, 50, went missing from near his home on Thursday. On Friday, his family registered a missing person case and police launched their probe.

The police cracked the case after they took into custody a known history-sheeter and based on his statement, arrested Joseph’s former business partner Joemon.

Both Joseph and Joemon, after their business partnership ended, had serious differences of opinion with the former, according to Joemon, owing him a large sum of money.

There were frequent skirmishes between the two and it’s now believed that this enmity ended up with Joseph's murder.

The security forces have arrested five drug peddlers and recovered drugs from their possession valued at Rs 5.75 crore, an official said on Saturday, adding that seizures were made in Tripura and Mizoram.

An official in Agartala said that three drug peddlers were arrested in the Tripura capital on late Friday night and highly addictive 1.10 lakh methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba tablets or ‘crazy drug’ valued at Rs 5.50 crore were seized from their possession.

The drugs, intended to be smuggled to neighbouring Bangladesh, were recovered from a trolley bag which was in possession of the three persons, a police official said.

The arrested drug peddlers have been identified as Sahidul Hussain Talukdar, a resident of Silchar in southern Assam, and two Tripura-based traffickers, Nayanmani Namasudra from Kachucherra and Biswajit Biswas from Salema in Dhalai district.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar highlighted the success of the Punjab Government's anti-drug campaign, 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', and shared details of police action up to March 21 with the media.

On Saturday, Laljit Bhullar addressed a press conference at the party office in Chandigarh regarding this campaign. The minister stated that the results of the 'War Against Drugs' campaign have been very encouraging and that its positive impact is visible across Punjab. He added that the people of Punjab are praising the government for this initiative.

He mentioned that the Punjab Police is conducting this campaign very effectively. So far, 121 kg of heroin, 78 kg of opium, and approximately ₹5.25 crore in cash have been seized. Additionally, 2015 FIRs have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), and 3,376 drug traffickers have been arrested.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has claimed to have arrested a Bangladeshi smuggler with 3.38 kg heroin along the India-Bangladesh border in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The value of the seized narcotics is estimated to be nearly Rs 6,77,40,000 in the black market.

"Troops of the Pirojpur Border Outpost received specific intelligence regarding an attempt to smuggle narcotics across the IBB. The input stated that the narcotics would be smuggled from the Sadamachar area. Vigil along the border was stepped up. Around 4 p.m., the jawans spotted two men approaching the border from the Indian side. On being challenged, the two attempted to flee. The BSF troops managed to apprehend one of them," said N.K. Pandey, DIG and spokesperson, South Bengal Frontier, BSF.

Air India resumes flights at London-Heathrow airport

A day after flights were grounded at the Heathrow airport, nation’s largest carrier Air India said on Saturday that its flights, to and from the Europe’s busiest airport, have resumed.

The shutdown caused inconvenience to as many as 200,000 passengers as at least 1,351 inbound and outbound flights were grounded throughout Friday.

In a statement, Air India said that its operations to and from London Heathrow (LHR) airport have “recommenced after the disruption at the airport yesterday due to a power outage”.

“Today’s flight AI111 was on schedule and other flights, to and from London, are expected to operate as per schedule. Flight AI161 of 21 March, which was diverted to Frankfurt, is expected to leave Frankfurt at 14:05 pm local time,” the airline added.

Real estate firm Omaxe's share hits new 52-week low amid rising losses

The stock of real estate company Omaxe plummeted to its new 52-week low of Rs 71.81 per share this week amid growing losses and declining sales – at a time when both benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty saw their best weekly gains in almost four years.

Omaxe's 52-week high was recorded at Rs 162.45 apiece on July 30 last year.

On the last day of the trading week (Friday), Omaxe's stock opened at Rs 74.75 per share. During the trading session, the stock touched its highest level at Rs 78.00 but also saw a low of Rs 74.41.

At the end of trading, the company's stock closed at Rs 77 per share with a minor gain of Rs 2.81 or 3.79 per cent.
