Pakistan train attack: Security forces struggle to rescue hostages in Balochistan

The targeted attack of Jaffar Express passenger train by militants of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) at Mashkaf, Dhadar, Bolan, has now become a standoff between the security forces and the militants, who have taken over 100 passengers as hostages.

While BLA claims that it has taken at least 100 Pakistani military officials and personnel hostage after derailing the express train, Pakistani authorities said that the passenger train was carrying civilians and families, including women and children, who it says are under the custody of BLA militants after stopping the train in a tunnel.

"Terrorists have halted the train inside a tunnel to keep the hostages in control. Security forces have reached the area despite it being away from the roads. Terrorists are also in contact with their facilitators outside the country," stated sources in the security forces.

A man was allegedly beaten to death by a person with a cricket bat on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, police said.

The victim was identified as Neeraj (28). He was residing in Sainipura Mohalla in the Jharsa village of Gurugram.

The accused, identified as Sanjay (26), has been arrested for the crime.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday asked the officers to ensure speedy and timely completion of the construction of Shaheed Udham Singh State Institute of Medical Sciences and Civil Hospital at Hoshiarpur.

Chairing a meeting to review the progress of the proposed Institute and civil hospital here at his official residence, the Chief Minister said that the institute is aimed at ensuring quality healthcare services to the people. He said that the institute will come up over an area of 21.41 acres at a cost of Rs 418.30 Crore and will have a hospital with 300 Unit Beds and Medical College for 150 Annual student intake. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the ultra modern hospital will have two basements, Ground plus eight floors and service floor at the existing Medical Hospital Campus Hoshiarpur.

India's broadband subscribers rose to 944.96mn in Dec 2024: Govt data

The total number of broadband subscribers in India grew slightly in December 2024, reaching 944.96 million from 944.76 million in November, the Ministry of Communications said on Tuesday.

This was a marginal monthly growth rate of 0.02 per cent. The top five broadband providers continued to dominate the market, accounting for 98.40 per cent of the total broadband user base, which includes both wired and wireless connections.

Urban telephone subscribers also saw an increase, rising to 663.37 million in December from 660.62 million in the previous month.

The urban segment witnessed a net addition of 3.50 million subscribers, with a monthly growth rate of 0.53 per cent.

Overall, the total number of telephone subscribers in the country stood at 1,189.92 million at the end of December, with a net addition of 2.78 million users.

India top source country for FDI into Dubai with $3 billion investment

India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) into Dubai surged to $3.018 billion in 2024 -- a five times jump from $589 million in 2023, making the country the top investor in Dubai, a report showed on Tuesday.

India, the US, France and the UK were top source countries for FDI into the emirate.

India was the top source country with the highest total estimated FDI capital into Dubai, accounting for 21.5 per cent, followed by the US (13.7 per cent), France (11 per cent), United Kingdom (10 per cent), and Switzerland (6.9 per cent), according to Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism’s Dubai FDI Monitor.

India saves $5.43 billion forex as coal imports dip due to rising local production

Coal imports to the country during April-December period of the current financial year declined by 8.4 per cent to 183.42 million tonnes (MT) -- from 200.19 MT in the same period of previous financial year due to the increase in domestic production, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

The reduction in coal imports resulted in foreign exchange savings of approximately $5.43 billion (Rs 42,315.7 crore) for the country, the Coal Ministry said.

The non-regulated Sector, excluding the power sector, experienced a more significant decline, with imports dropping by 12.01 per cent year-on-year.

Although coal-based power generation grew by 3.53 per cent from April to December 2024 compared to the previous year, imports for blending by thermal power plants to increase the calorific value of coal decreased sharply by 29.8 per cent.

Telangana tunnel tragedy: Search operation in full swing with robot technology

Search operation using robot technology was in full swing in a partially collapsed tunnel in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district on Tuesday to trace seven missing persons.

Multiple rescue teams continued their search operation in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel for the 18th day.

As per the government's decision to use robots, representatives from Anvi Robotics, a Hyderabad-based company, deployed an AI-based robotic camera system.

On Tuesday morning, company representatives sent the robotic system into the tunnel using a loco train. They also set up a communication system near the control office.
