CBI registers FIR against revenue department officials for Rs 42 cr fraud in Srinagar district

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said on Saturday that it has registered an FIR against some revenue officials of the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner’s office for swindling government funds to the tune of Rs 42 crore.

Officials said that CBI Srinagar, has registered a major case against officials of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Srinagar, revenue officials, and private individuals for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore scam related to the post-2014 flood relief distribution.

“FIR No. 04/2025 has been registered under multiple Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Svt. 2006 and 1988, as amended by the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019), and the Ranbir Penal Code (Svt. 1989), including Sections 5(1)(d), 5(2), 13(1)(a), 13(2), 420, 120-B read with 318 BNS.

“The case follows discreet verification by the CBI, which found credible evidence of fraudulent practices and fake documentation used in securing government relief funds intended for flood affected shopkeepers in Srinagar.

Typhoon Wutip, the first typhoon of this year, has caused severe flooding in central Vietnam, leaving three people dead, local media reported on Saturday.

Two victims died in Trieu Phong district of Quang Tri province during flood prevention efforts, while another was drowned in Hai Lang district, reports.

In neighbouring Quang Binh province, four people remain missing as search and rescue teams continue to expand operations under improving weather conditions.

Floodwaters have submerged more than 21,000 hectares of rice fields, along with thousands of hectares of vegetables and aquaculture ponds, while tens of thousands of poultry have been killed, according to the report.

Severe flooding also inundated homes, disrupted traffic, and forced evacuations in both lowland and mountainous areas, though river levels are gradually receding.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Wutip also made its second landfall near Leizhou City in south China's Guangdong Province at around 12:30 a.m. (local time) on Saturday, according to the provincial meteorological observatory.

In a breakthrough, Patna Police on Saturday morning arrested notorious criminal Angesh Kumar following an encounter in the Khusrupur area on the outskirts of the city.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Avakash Kumar, the arrest was the result of a well-planned operation based on specific intelligence. Angesh, wanted in over 18 criminal cases including attempt to murder, dacoity, arms possession, and loot, had been hiding in a village under the jurisdiction of Khusrupur police station.

“Acting on a tip-off, a special team led by the Khusrupur SHO raided the location early morning. While in custody, the accused tried to escape by attacking the police and opened fire using a concealed weapon. Our team retaliated swiftly and overpowered him,” SSP Kumar said.

During the exchange, Angesh sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was immediately taken into custody and admitted to a hospital. Police sources confirmed his injuries were minor, and he remains under medical supervision.

Typhoon Wutip, the first typhoon of this year, made its second landfall near Leizhou City in south China's Guangdong Province at around 12:30 a.m. (local time) on Saturday, according to the provincial meteorological observatory.

At the time of landfall, Wutip had weakened to a severe tropical storm, with a maximum wind speed of 30 metres per second near its centre and a central minimum pressure of 980 hectopascals.

Wutip had initially made landfall near Dongfang City in south China's island province of Hainan around 11 p.m. on Friday.

It is expected to move northeast at a speed of 20 to 25 km per hour, skirting the border area between Guangdong and Guangxi, while gradually weakening in intensity, news agency reported.

Tens of thousands of people had been evacuated to safety in south China's Hainan Province as Typhoon Wutip, the first typhoon of the year.

North Korea appears to have edited recent state media images to remove a top naval commander after last month's failed launch of a new warship, local media have reported.

In state media footage aired on Friday on the relaunch ceremony of the 5,000-tonne Kang Kon destroyer, Kim Myong-sik, the North's former chief navy commander, was notably absent from images showing leader Kim Jong-un's earlier inspection of the warship's construction.

Hong Kil-ho, manager of the Chongjin Shipyard -- where an incident involving the destroyer reportedly occurred -- also appeared to have been deleted from the images, reports.

NK News said state media has not commonly deleted officials from photos since the 2013 execution of Jang Song-thaek, an uncle of the North's leader who was purged from senior leadership.

Indian Medical Association, Gujarat State Branch on Saturday urged Tata Sons to extend financial support to medical students at the BJ Medical College who were injured and killed in the Air India flight AI -171 crash near Ahmedabad airport.

Several students from the college had been present at the site during the incident which has shaken the country and claimed about 274 lives including those onboard and on-ground.

Following the crash, the Tata group, which owns Air India, announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash.

In a letter addressed to N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, the IMA appreciated Air India's announcement of compensation and requested the company for generous and urgent support for the affected medical students and doctors as well.

US-based Axiom Space is now set to take Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to International Space Station (ISS) on June 19, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday.

Shukla’s flight earlier scheduled to launch on June 11, after being deferred multiple time, was postponed due to technical observations related to the Zvezda module of the ISS.

The leak was detected in the propulsion bay during a pre-launch test.

ISRO noted that Axiom Space has informed that they are working closely with NASA to assess the pressure anomaly in the Zvezda Service Module onboard the International Space Station.

In a crackdown on radical networks, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday carried out searches at multiple locations in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in connection with the Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) terror conspiracy case, the probe agency’s statement said.

The raids were conducted at three premises in Bhopal and two in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, as part of the agency’s investigation into the case, also known as the HuT Bhopal case.

The searches aimed to gather further evidence on the activities of members of the banned outfit.

According to the NIA, several digital devices and other incriminating materials were seized during the operations.

“These items will undergo detailed forensic examination to aid in the ongoing investigation,” NIA said.

Externee arrested for violating externment order in South West Delhi

In a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb criminal activity in the national Capital, the Special Staff of the South West District police arrested an externee who was found violating an active externment order.

The accused, identified as Manish, a 31-year-old resident of Brahmpuri, Pankha Road, Sagarpur, had been directed to stay out of the area for a period of one year under a legal order issued by the Additional DCP-I of South West District on August 27, 2024.

According to the official press release issued by the South West District Police, the arrest was made on June 12, after a team from the Special Staff received specific information through a secret informer about Manish’s presence in the Sagarpur area. Acting swiftly, the team carried out a raid and successfully apprehended the accused from the locality.

“During interrogation and verification of records, it was confirmed that the accused Manish had been externed for a year but was found in the jurisdiction of PS Sagarpur, Delhi, in clear violation of the externment order,” the statement read.
