J&K: Teenager dead, 20 injured in two separate road accidents in Rajouri

A teenager was killed and 14 others were injured on Saturday in a road accident in Jammu & Kashmir’s Rajouri district.

Police said that nine passengers were injured when the minibus they were travelling in met with an accident near Kunjwani in Jammu.

All the injured were shifted to hospital where one of them, Surbhi Kumari,18, daughter of Ashwani Kumar of Jallo chak Gangyal, succumbed to her injuries.

30 college students detained in police crackdown on drug menace in Tamil Nadu

At least 30 students were detained on Saturday after Tamil Nadu Police launched a crackdown against the drug menace in Potheri and Kattankulathur in Chengalpattu district.

Acting on a tip-off, around 500 police officials swooped down on men's and women's hostels and conducted searches in all the rooms.

According to sources in Chengalpattu police, the Saturday morning action was following intelligence tip offs that both boys and girls of colleges in and around Potheri and Kattankulathur in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu were involved in drug usage.

Political parties in Tamil Nadu, including DMK ally, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), had called upon the state Home Department to put an end to the menace of drugs that was plaguing the youth of the state.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has vowed to crush the drug menace in the state and said the prevalence of narcotic substances is not just a law and order issue but also a social issue and a massive movement will be launched to eliminate it in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK was on the backfoot when its NRI cell office bearer, Jaffer Siddik was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a case related to the smuggling of drugs to Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.

A defective helicopter being airlifted from Uttarakhand's Kedarnath to Gauchar by an MI-17 chopper accidentally fell from mid-air as the towing rope snapped this morning.

The helicopter, which was operated by a private company, crashed near the Mandakini River in Lincholi. An official said no one was injured in the accident, which was caught on camera.

"Today, the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) rescue team received information through police in Lincholi that a faulty helicopter of a private company, which was being towed by another helicopter from Shri Kedarnath helipad to Gochar helipad, fell into the river at Lincholi near Tharu Camp. The SDRF team has reached the spot and relief work is going on. There has been no loss of life in this incident," the news agency quoted.

The chopper was earlier involved in ferrying passengers to Kedarnath temple.

Tripura: Over 17,500 people leave relief camps as flood situation improves

With a significant improvement in the overall flood situation in Tripura, around 86 per cent of the worst affected people who took shelter in 558 relief camps across the state, have returned to their homes since the last one week, an official said here on Friday.

Disaster management department officials said that around 17,940 flood-affected people were sheltered in 329 relief camps on Friday compared to 1.28 lakh people including women and children who were in 558 camps on August 23.

According to officials, the terrible floods since August 19 in Tripura claimed at least 32 lives and injured many, besides affecting over 17 lakh people in all the eight districts of the state.

Out of the 32 deaths, 20 were killed in landslides and house collapses in different places, while 12 died due to drowning.

Due to the heavy rains and floods, the state government closed all the educational institutions from August 21 and these were reopened from Tuesday (August 27).

The body of the child was found on Friday, 48 hours after the incident.

Three persons were killed in a road accident in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana on Thursday.

The accident occurred when a car in which they were travelling rammed into a parked truck on the Hyderabad-Bangalore national highway near Tatikonda in Bhoothpur Mandal.

Four others were critically injured in the accident.

The injured were admitted to the government hospital at Mahabubnagar, where the condition of the two was stated to be critical.

Five arrested for planning to attack Bengal CM's residence

Five people were arrested on Thursday on the charges of planning to attack the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kalighat here.

The accused formulated a plan for the crime on a WhatsApp group, Kolkata Police said.

The arrested persons, including two women, have been identified as Krishna Ghosh, Barsha Ghosh, Subham Sensharma, Arijit Dey and Swagoto Banerjee.

Dey and Swagoto were the admins of the said WhatsApp group.

On the social media group, several written and voice messages were sent or forwarded calling for assembling at a place for attacking the residence of the Chief Minister.

All five have been booked under various sections of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Three terrorists were killed on Thursday in two encounters in J&K’s Kupwara district as the third operation against terrorists continued in the Rajouri district.

Officials said that two terrorists were killed in the Machail sector and one in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district when the Army foiled infiltration bids in these areas of the Line of Control (LoC).

“Three terrorists have been killed in two anti-infiltration operations, two in Kumkadi area of Machail and one in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district on Thursday. In the ongoing anti-Infiltration operation two terrorist bodies have been seen by distance in the Kumkadi area and one terrorist body in the Tangdhar area. Due to inclement weather as it is raining heavily in the area, the search operation has been hampered. Once the weather improves operation in the area will continue”, officials said.

The Officials said earlier that following intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of terrorists in Lathi village of Rajouri district, security forces including the Army, local police and the CRPF started a CASO (Cordon & Search Operation).

Nearly 50 pilgrims were reported to be stranded in Dwarka on Wednesday due to the heavy rains in Gujarat.

Under fire after the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that her government will pass a Bill in the Assembly to ensure capital punishment for convicts in rape and murder cases.

“We will move a Bill in the state Assembly within 10 days seeking capital punishment for culprits in rape and murder cases. We will send it to the Governor, and if he doesn't pass the Bill, we will sit on indefinite protest outside the Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed... He cannot evade accountability this time. Why should rapists not be hanged," Banerjee asked while addressing an even to mark the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), her party's students’ wing.

Echoing the statements of Trinamool General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, who spoke just before her, the Chief Minister questioned the progress made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, 14 days after the case was handed over to the probe agency by the Calcutta High Court.
