Ahmedabad plane crash: IMA urges Tata Sons to support injured, deceased medical students

Indian Medical Association, Gujarat State Branch on Saturday urged Tata Sons to extend financial support to medical students at the BJ Medical College who were injured and killed in the Air India flight AI -171 crash near Ahmedabad airport.

Several students from the college had been present at the site during the incident which has shaken the country and claimed about 274 lives including those onboard and on-ground.

Following the crash, the Tata group, which owns Air India, announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic plane crash.

In a letter addressed to N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, the IMA appreciated Air India's announcement of compensation and requested the company for generous and urgent support for the affected medical students and doctors as well.

In a crackdown on radical networks, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday carried out searches at multiple locations in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in connection with the Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) terror conspiracy case, the probe agency’s statement said.

The raids were conducted at three premises in Bhopal and two in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, as part of the agency’s investigation into the case, also known as the HuT Bhopal case.

The searches aimed to gather further evidence on the activities of members of the banned outfit.

According to the NIA, several digital devices and other incriminating materials were seized during the operations.

“These items will undergo detailed forensic examination to aid in the ongoing investigation,” NIA said.

In a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb criminal activity in the national Capital, the Special Staff of the South West District police arrested an externee who was found violating an active externment order.

The accused, identified as Manish, a 31-year-old resident of Brahmpuri, Pankha Road, Sagarpur, had been directed to stay out of the area for a period of one year under a legal order issued by the Additional DCP-I of South West District on August 27, 2024.

According to the official press release issued by the South West District Police, the arrest was made on June 12, after a team from the Special Staff received specific information through a secret informer about Manish’s presence in the Sagarpur area. Acting swiftly, the team carried out a raid and successfully apprehended the accused from the locality.

“During interrogation and verification of records, it was confirmed that the accused Manish had been externed for a year but was found in the jurisdiction of PS Sagarpur, Delhi, in clear violation of the externment order,” the statement read.

The accident took place near New Loha Mandi. A sudden storm swept through the city in the evening, causing the wall of the house to collapse.

Eight people were buried under the debris. Nearby residents immediately informed the police and administration.

Officials from the administration, Municipal Corporation, and Fire Brigade reached the spot recovered the bodies and rescued the injured, who were then taken to the Jaya Arogya Hospital.

Apart from the 241 people aboard the ill-fated aircraft who perished in the crash, many innocent people on the ground were feared killed as the Boeing plane crashed into a residential building and burst into a ball of flames. Among those killed on the ground was 14-year-old Akash, who became a victim of the crash’s fiery aftermath.

Akash was sitting near a tea stall next to the BJ Medical College, close to the crash site, when part of the aircraft struck the area. His mother, who ran a shop below the hospital, witnessed the horrific scene.

“He was sitting there near the shop when a part of the plane landed, hitting his head, and then fire engulfed him,” said his aunt. “His mother tried to save him, but the flames spread so quickly. She was almost caught in the fire herself.”

As the nation reels from the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI-171, grief is pouring in from households across India, where families are mourning loved ones lost in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.

Among the 241 people killed in the air crash, the pain is especially raw in Kurukshetra, Vadodara, and Kheda district of Gujarat.

Anju Sharma, originally from Kurukshetra, had been living in Vadodara with her family. She was on her way to London to visit her elder daughter when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on June 12 and rammed into a doctor's hostel nearby.

Her uncle, Balkishan Sharma, deeply shaken, said, “I rarely watch TV. She was my brother’s eldest daughter. I found out about the tragedy from the news.”

Kerala triple murderer found dead in Kedarnath

A Kerala man, who was on the run after murdering his second wife and her mother last week, is reported to have been found dead in a rest centre in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath, officials said on Thursday.

The development came as the Thrissur police were alerted by the locals in Kedarnath rest centre when a body was found on Thursday morning.

On checking the personal effects of the deceased, they recovered an Aadhaar card and based on the information, they called the home of Prem Kumar, 48, and passed on the information to his family members.

The family members subsequently informed the local police, who immediately alerted a team of Kerala Police officials who were in Delhi searching for the accused.

The team in Delhi has been asked to reach Kedarnath at the earliest.
