2nd Test: Rohit set the tone by stepping out aggressively right from first ball, says Ashwin

Adjudged Player of the Series, Ravichandran Ashwin shed light on how Rohit Sharma's decisive leadership played a pivotal role in the win, which helped India secure a record-extending 18th home series victory and strengthen their position at the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table with 74.24 percentage points.

India's emphatic seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur, marred by rain interruptions that cost over 200 overs of play, saw both teams battling against time to force a result. However, despite losing crucial time on the second and third days, India’s aggression and determination to push for victory never wavered.

Speaking after the match, Ashwin highlighted the importance of Rohit Sharma's bold tactical decisions, which set the foundation for India’s win. "Winning this game was important for us," Ashwin remarked. "It was a massive win in the context of the WTC. Rohit was keen that we needed at least 80 overs to bowl at them. He said even if we get bowled out for 230, it's okay. He set the tone by stepping out aggressively right from the first ball."

This aggressive mindset was reflected in India's approach throughout the match. After Bangladesh managed 233 in their rain-affected first innings, India came out with an aggressive batting display on Day 4, racking up 285/9 in just 34.4 overs before declaring. This gave them a slender lead of 52, but more importantly, enough time to bowl out Bangladesh again.

'We're willing to take risk', says Rohit on India's attacking mindset against Bangladesh

After India whitewashed Bangladesh 2-0 in the Test series with a seven-wicket win at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, skipper Rohit Sharma revealed the attacking mindset of the team, saying the players were willing to take the risk to bat on the pitch that didn't have much to offer.

Notably, it was India's 18th consecutive Test series win at home since 2013. In the extended morning session, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah played a key role as Bangladesh were bundled out for 233, setting a 95-run target for India to win the match and clean sweep the series.

In the chase, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a 51 before being dismissed while Virat Kohli remained not out with 29 runs as India wrapped up the win in 17.2 overs inside two sessions on the final day.

"Once we lost two and a half days, when we came on Day 4, we wanted to get them out as quickly as possible and see what we can do with the bat. When they got bowled out for 230, it wasn't about the runs we get but the overs we got at them."

'He has a lot of heart': Bumrah lauds Akash Deep after series victory against Bangladesh

After India’s emphatic seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah expressed his satisfaction at the emergence of Bengal pacer Akash Deep in the Test arena.

The Kanpur Test marked another milestone for the 27-year-old Akash, who picked up three crucial wickets, reinforcing his reputation as a reliable bowler. Bumrah, speaking to the broadcaster after the win, praised Akash’s fighting spirit and hunger to improve, acknowledging the progress he’s made since his debut earlier in 2024.

Akash, who burst onto the international scene with a fiery spell against England, has been consistently delivering for India in the Test format. His ability to trouble left-handers has been especially noteworthy, as was evident in the series against Bangladesh, where his knack for dismissing key batters has added an extra dimension to India’s bowling attack. Bumrah, reflecting on Akash’s contribution, emphasised how much the young bowler has learned and evolved in his brief time with the national side.

Sophie Molineux feels 'nervousness' on her Women's T20 WC return

Australia all-rounder Sophie Molineux is a little bit nervous about the Women's T20 World Cup in UAE following her return to the national team earlier this year.

The two-time World Cup winner spent over two years out of the team due to serious foot and knee injuries between 2021 and 2024. She missed the 2022 ODI World Cup, 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 T20 World Cup for Australia. As the tournament begins on October 3, the all-rounder is ready to play any role for her side.

"I haven't been around for a few years in terms of World Cups so there is a little bit of nervousness that I'm feeling at the moment," cricket.com.au quoted Molineux as saying. "But that's cool, and it's a T20 World Cup and there's so much could happen in that space," she added.

The 26-year-old returned to the Australian team against South Africa earlier this year and has not looked back. She bagged the Player of the Series award against Bangladesh in the T20I series in March. However, a rib injury interrupted her World Cup preparations but she returned to take on key overs in the powerplay and at the death in the recent T20I series against New Zealand.

Duckett looks perfect in England's ODI top order, says Atherton

Duckett looks perfect in England's ODI top order, says Atherton

Former England captain Michael Atherton believes Ben Duckett is a perfect fit at the top order in ODIs, especially after he hit a century against Australia in Bristol. His efforts, though, weren’t enough for England to avoid a 3-2 series defeat, as Australia were handed a 49-run victory via DLS method.

Left-handed opener Duckett’s ton at Bristol took his tally of runs across the five ODIs to 305, thus making his case strong for being given a consistent run in the format. "Ben Duckett looks just about right at the top of the order and it will be very interesting to see who opens with him.

"It is easy to say in hindsight, but what clearly happened is that the selectors showed too much faith in the World Cup-winning side of 2019. So, when Duckett came into the Test side, he did very well at the start of Bazball, I was very surprised he wasn't then the first choice for ODI."

Bumrah happy to gain momentum ahead of Australia Test tour

India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is happy to get some overs under his belt in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home ahead of the Australia Test tour in November.

After the conclusion of the Test series against Bangladesh, India will host New Zealand for a three-match Test series before leaving for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Bumrah, who picked five wickets in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, said he is getting ready to bowl long spells in Australian conditions while reiterating his love for Test cricket.

"For me, my favourite format is the Test format. I've said it before as well that I wanted to play this format and I'm doing that now. Good to get some overs under the belt and build up those overs. Number of overs we bowl in Australia will be a lot more," the premier pacer told the host broadcaster before the start of play on Monday.

Madrid derby halted for 15 minutes after ultras unrest

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid drew the first Madrid derby of the season 1-1 with goals from Eder Militao and Angel Correa, in a game that will unfortunately be remembered for reasons other than football.

The result was overshadowed by lamentable incidents in the stands of Atletico's Metropolitano Stadium in the second half of the game.

Real Madrid had taken a 63rd minute lead through Eder Militao when referee Busquets Ferrer was forced to stop the game after members of Atletico Madrid's 'Frente Atletico' ultra group, some of whom had their faces completely covered by masks, situated behind Thibaut Courtois in the Real Madrid goal, began to rain objects onto the pitch, reports

The game was suspended for 15 minutes to try and calm things down before restarting, although TV images showed further objects thrown towards Courtois in the closing minutes of the game.
