Study shows how blood sugar response to carbs can signal prediabetes risk

Blood sugar responses after food, especially carbohydrates, may indicate metabolic health status as well as signal the risk of prediabetes, according to a study.

Researchers from Stanford University in the US explained that the differences in blood sugar response patterns among individuals were associated with specific metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance or beta cell dysfunction -- both can lead to diabetes.

The findings, published in Nature Medicine, suggest that this variability in blood sugar response could lead to personalised prevention and treatment strategies for prediabetes and diabetes.

"This study suggests that not only are there subtypes within prediabetes, but also that your subtype could determine the foods you should and should not eat," said Michael Snyder, Professor in Genetics at Stanford Medicine.

Mid-senior level jobs surge in India’s GCCs as industry seeks top talent: Report

Mid-senior level jobs surge in India’s GCCs as industry seeks top talent: Report

The talent mix within global capability centres (GCCs) in India is evolving and entry-level roles have declined from 32 per cent to 22 per cent while mid-senior roles have surged to 77 per cent, a 14-point increase, a report showed on Thursday.

This shift points to an increased demand for professionals with "ready-now" capabilities to lead digital innovation in AI, ML, and cloud technologies, said the report by CIEL HR, an end-to-end HR solutions provider.

GCCs are offering significantly higher compensation, ranging from 12 per cent to 20 per cent above traditional IT services, especially in high-demand domains such as generative AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, and cloud. This reflects the premium placed on digital expertise and the sector’s race to attract top talent.

Australian scientists introduce real-time genome sequencing to combat deadly superbug

Australian researchers have achieved a major advance in tackling Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as golden staph, a superbug that causes more than a million deaths worldwide each year.

The world-first initiative has demonstrated that real-time genome sequencing during severe infections allows doctors to quickly identify resistance mutations, personalise treatment, and help curb the spread of antibiotic resistance, according to a release from the Melbourne-based Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) on Wednesday, reports news agency.

Collaborating with seven local hospitals, scientists from the Doherty Institute said that traditionally, hospital laboratories identify bacteria using standard tests that reveal only the species type, offering limited insight into antibiotic resistance or genetic changes, the release said.

India’s services sector stays on fast growth track in May, hiring at all-time high: Survey

India’s services sector activity kept up its high pace of growth in May, driven by a strong demand for exports, which also saw hiring of staff by firms surge to an all-time high during the month, according to the latest HDBC survey.

Registering 58.8 in May, the seasonally adjusted HSBC India Services PM Business Activity Index -- based on a single question asking how the level of business activity compares with the situation the month before -- was broadly in line with April's reading of 58.7 (PMI) and therefore signalled another sharp rate of expansion. Growth was reportedly underpinned by healthy demand conditions, new client wins and greater staffing capacity, the survey states.

Notably, companies observed a near-record improvement in international demand for their services during May. Over the course of the survey's 19-and-a-half-year history, faster increases in new export orders were only recorded in May and June 2024. When citing sources of growth, firms mentioned Asia, Europe and North America in particular, the survey said.

'At the moment Djokovic's a bit underrated', says Zverev after French Open semifinal loss

After losing to Novak Djokovic in the French Open semifinal, last year's finalist Alexander Zverev reflected on defeat to three-time Roland Garros champion and called the Serbian great an "underrated player".

The 24-time major champion Djokovic, who has suffered consecutive opening-round defeats to start the clay-court swing, has rediscovered his best form at the perfect time in his quest for a record 25th major trophy.

The sixth seed Serbian did not arrive in Paris as the leading favourite, but delivered a tactically astute display to prevail 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and reach a record-extending 51st Grand Slam semi-final.
