The holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple here, received bomb threat for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, stepping up security and a search operation by deploying Border Security Force’s bomb squad and the state police.

An email to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) warned of blasts using RDX-filled pipes.

According to the email, explosives like RDX would be placed inside pipes to trigger blasts within the Golden Temple complex.

After the message, security agencies were put on high alert and scanned the entire complex. For the past two days police has been deployed in strength for intensive checking and surveillance being carried out.

Punjab Police foil targeted killing plot; five operatives linked to Bhagwanpuria gang held

In a significant breakthrough, Punjab Police have foiled a targeted killing plot with the arrest of five operatives linked to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, being operated by US-based Husandeep Singh, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.

Two weapons-- PX5 pistol and .32 bore pistol – were recovered from their possession in the intelligence-led operation jointly conducted by Counter-Intelligence Punjab and the district police of Amritsar (Rural) and Batala. Those arrested have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, Sikandar Kumar, alias Gola, and Onkarpreet, alias Jashan -- residents of Shahabad village in Batala; Gagandeep, alias Giani, a resident of Gandhi Camp in Batala and Mehakpreet Singh, a resident of Amritsar.

Punjab Assembly pays tributes to Fauja Singh

On a motion moved by Punjab Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh, the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday expressed sorrow over the demise of eminent Punjabi Sikh runner Fauja Singh and paid tribute to him.

Expressing grief over the demise of 114-year-old Fauja Singh in a road accident, Ravjot Singh said he was the world’s oldest runner who had brought glory to the Sikh community worldwide through marathon races.

The minister said that Fauja Singh would always remain in the memories. He prayed to God to give the family the strength to bear the loss.

The body of the iconic runner has been kept in a mortuary till the arrival of his children, who are living abroad. The last rites will be performed after their arrival.

He was hit by a vehicle around 3.30 p.m. while crossing the road at his native Beas village near Adampur town.
